Not too long ago, a message came out recommending all DHS personnel register in the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge and if you have been to the Chiefs Academy, you are familiar with it.
My unit enrolled in it soon after I reported. You can enroll once and join several groups. Ex, I am enrolled in my unit's group as well as the United States Coast Guard group under DHS. I only have to log the activity once and it shows in both groups.
The purpose of this post is to share the link with anyone not aware of it and to possibly create a "CG Chiefs" group. I know there was a fitness thread created, but it's kind of all over the place and this way you can track your own progress and compare it with others of your age group and activity levels.

JP3,
I was sent the stats for the healthier feds challenge and the CG kicked the bejesus out of our partner agencies.
Send me the group ID and code number and I'll add it to my profile. We can belong to multiple groups and thepoints will count toward all of the groups.
As the HPC for the LANT/D5 Staff I created a seperate group for people to join along with the big CG group. I was able to track everyone's progress and send out motivational reminders.

Sign me up for baton twirling!!! Seriously...they have everything under the sun but no Paintball!!! I waste a lot of calories storming a hostile bunker...tripping, falling, jumping back up and making a mad dash forward, realizing there is a lot of paint heading my way, zigging and zagging leaping over the bunker and ending up in a commando roll (really tripping and falling again)...ending up behind cover where I have to be a yoga master to keep shooting from...fun times...

Great information Steve!
can you post the Group ID here, I remember that United States Coast Guard was the Group name. This way anyone that joins new can be in both groups.
If you are already registered all you need to do is select the "your groups" tab when you are logged in, then add a group with the group name and id listed above in this thread.
If you haven't registered, be sure to register as an individual, then you can add you group as mentioned above. Again, if you need any assistance, just email or pm me.

To people that are not already registered and wish to join, feel free to contact me via email or pm. I also ask that you use your real name, first initial or full name then last. That way we know whose who.
thanks, John

They dont have any of my events.
Napping, The one footed hop after stepping on a toy, actually a 2 part event. Part two is the toy toss for distance.
And my favorite event, the tough guy competition between Dad and the 14 year old. So far I am still winning that one but he is lifting weights now and it may only be a few more years before he gets the better of me. He might get stronger, but I play dirty <Evil Grin>

Oh no. Orienteering is not geocaching. There is a resemblence, but they are not the same. Geocaching is usually done with a GPS receiver (GPSr) and orienteering is only done with a map and compass. I do both and love each. I usually try to do my geocaching without the GPSr to make it more challenging. In orienteering you are looking for O-flags that are international orange and white. In geocaching you are looking for hidden tupperware. Sometimes you are right on top of the container and still don't see it. Some O-flags I can spot from 100 yds away.

BMC John Phillips III

Master Chief,
thanks for correcting me on that. I admit, I didn't read deeply into the orienteering but it sounded similar to me. The only geocaching I have done so far was on the water and it was over fishing holes not tupperware ;)
I guess that would be called "hydrocaching" or in my case, "hardly-catching!"

I went to the clinic today to turn in my paperwork for my physical. The HS2 asked me how often I exercise. My response was does chasing the kids and dog count? Under amount of exercise he typed "No Planned exercise"
I said that is the perfect description for me. He looked at me kind of funny.
I said its perfect because if I am exercising it's not planned...it's an accident!

I just reached 20,000 points, how do I get my award? Do I have to pay for it? I could not find any info on the site to answer my question.
BMC John Phillips III
04-01-2007, 09:49 PM
Ray, yes, if you are not doing it as any part of a sponsored group, you buy your own awards. My EPO ordered everything when he earned his Bronze Award, the T-shirt is pretty nice and everything else that came with it was cool too. I don't remember it being very expensive. I'm kinda cheap though so I am holding out for the Gold before I buy anything. I figure why have 3 different award T-shirts?

PACS Steve Carleton

The awards are not that expensive -- I think $15.00 for the pin, certificate, medal and shirt.
Even if you don't want to buy the award, the lifetime of physical fitness should be your only reward.

I agree on the second point, however, I have never heard of an awardee having to pay for something he or she was awarded.
I logged everything I did that was on the list, including gardening, carpentry (home repairs) (talk about hard work, I put in 11 hours on Saturday and was just exhausted when I was done, but the deck looks good!) and bowling just to see what would happen when I reached the 20,000 point mark. I didn't cheat, just did what I could do within the rules.
In the future I will no longer log the home repairs, bowling and gardening stuff, just the actual exercises.

Ray, if I were you, I would bring this up to your command. Get everyone at the unit onboard with the program (two groups - your work and DHS USCG) then when members earn the Gold Award - have the unit pay for the awards. Otherwise as PACS said, just by yourself one. I realize what you are saying about having to pay for it yourself. But who else would you have pay for it?
PACS Steve Carleton
04-03-2007, 12:08 PM
Part of the problem is that here are typically no funds available to purchase things for Health Promotion, unlike a morale committee.
When the Healthier Feds Challenge kicked off, I contacted the Regional Health Manager to see what kinds of awards they would offer or forms of reimbursement, they said no money available, maybe your unit will kick in.
As one of the HPCs for the dual command we proposed purchasing (with no budget, and no guidelines on establishing monies for this type of thing) the awards for all of those who achieved them during the challenge period, the command didn't like the idea because we would only be showing off all of those people who are already fit and making the people who do not exercise regularly feel bad.

The Challenge is a joke, how can
Billiards
Darts
Fishing
be even remotely considered to be exercise.
Fishing? How hard is it to sit in a boat, on a dock or on shore and wait for a fish to take your bait. The hardest part is lugging the equipment back and forth to the fishing site. Plus most of the time fishing involes drinking adult beverages or soda.
I never, ever worked up sweat playing 8 ball.
Yeah, I guess those little pointy thingies that are thrown at a board can cause one to work up a sweat.

Sorry Ray I have to disagree with the fishing part. Up here in Alaska I catch so many salmon in an hour that both arms are sore and can hardly hold my fishing pole up but I understand with all of you guy not up here in the greatest state in America. Fishing probably shouldn't be considered physical fitness.:D

Wow, talk about touchy feely political correctness run a muck?
What's next, let's not kick someone out on the fat boy program cause it might hurt their feelings?
Ray, fishing is hard hard work :D I know from experience. The point system is pretty fair in regards to the effort to point value for each sport or activity they have listed. You have to keep in mind the idea behind the program, to keep people active. I guess if you want to call it a joke you can, but it's a personal tool to use to keep with a program. If you signed up for it with the intent of receiving an award other than better health and well-being and being more physically active, then you signed up for the wrong reasons brother.

There are three levels to the program, each has a different point level to obtain the awards, but is basically equal. Due to my physical activity level, I chose the third option (Advanced Performance Presidential Champions Program - Performance Option) that doesn't cap my daily points at 850 -- if you look at some of my points in there I have 1200 points for a single activity. I am running the Marine Corps Marathon in October and can't wait to see what the points will be for that.

Gold Champion Set (medallion, certificate, ribbon, pin) -- $9.00

I did a compare with others and it looks like I'm the only one participating lately. I think it goes by program and I may be the only one in the program I'm in. Who is the ADMIN for the CGChiefs? I would like to see how the group is doing. I also added a few other CG groups to compare to and either everyone stopped working out or stopped logging in.
I'm looking at the weather now and trying to decide if I'll ride to work again today. I wish we would start getting some good summer weather up here. It's no fun to ride a bike for an hour in 55*f and 20kts of wind.

Going through CPOA I came in second with over 34,000 points. I missed being #1 by less than 200 points. Damn mountain biking. I was playing racquetball and working out 3-4 hours each day. That was July '05. I started the unit profile CG STA Fort Lauderdale back in Aug '06 and since then I just went over to be able to receive the gold medal. That did not include my CPOA points. I started from scratch. Look to place myself on these other list. Very nice site, and a good way for members to see how they are doing.

Ray, your points towards the award top out at about 700 per day I think. So the overage would be the total of days you went over your daily allowance towards the award. Your overall total should be accurate as of the date of the post.
PACS Steve Carleton
07-12-2007, 09:36 AM
Ray/JP3,
It also depends on what program you are registered for. Some of the programs have a cap of 700 per day. The one I am entering does not, however, it takes longer for me to obtain the awards.
For example, I can get 1300 points for running a marathon (not sure if this exact) but for me to achieve the award, I have to rack up more points. If I change the program, it recalculates the points with the cap and still takes just as long to achieve the award.

Since I am within 20% of reaching my goal for a Gold award, I sent an e-mail to the challenge to ask them why I have to pay for my awards. The person that e-mailed me said it was because they are a non-profit organization and as such require the purchase of awards. That makes sense and I can live with that.
She also said that I will be eligible for a Platinum award in the form of a free t-shirt once I reach 500,000 points. Wow! 500,000 points, since it has taken me a year to reach 80,000 points it will take me over five more years to reach 500,000. Now I have another goal to shoot for, a free t-shirt. So it all makes sense now, life long fitness.
Cool.

Can you update us on the log. Everyone still participating??
I finally broke the Gold about 3 weeks ago, and now 17% towards the "BLING BLING" Platinum.
Cheers

Last I checked compared to others I may be in second now. I am 26% to platinum. Been slacking a bit and then just over a month ago hitting it as hard as I did at the CPOA.
Lost a lot of my motivation, and was not in a good place from all the BS over the past 8 months, especially having my CWO package pulled, and taken off the list. But my motivation to stay active and healthy is back and can't wait to go to my new unit in a different Sector and District.

I figured with the Fit-to-Fight (PT) program at the SNCOA, I'd better get logged in as well.
600 points today... and I'm sore...

Where is the effort on the part of the Chiefs?? And Stew is the one saying that someone who is at their MAW and BF should not recieve a 7 on marks. Since 70% of the way a person looks is based on something out of the members control, and that is GENETICS/Metabolism, and the other 30% is split in half between working out and what you eat, and looking at the EFFORT here, what should I receive on my marks since I make and enforce policy in addition to the effort above?
JPIII, you need to step it up a bit. Racquetball is what is helping my cause. I do it 2-3 hours a day 5 or more times a week in addition to what I do at the station and at home. I may not have an ideal looking body but I will kick a lot of peoples arse in racquetball, basketball, or name any type of "BALL" or PFT. Game on. :D

So racquetball is how your doing it.
I'll leave my comments to myself on the any type of ball challenge.;)

I have no excuse not to exercise, the exercise room is less than 20' from my office door. I usually put in 200 minutes a week on aerobics and weight training and have a good time doing it.

Man , 11700 points to go till Gold wow. It seems like forever. Soccer today for an hour and a half, racked up some points. Ran three miles yesterday, walked the dog another three. Six miles of activity racked some more points. been pretty active lately, have shed three lbs to boot. I have been splitting wood on the farm with an axe, but sure is physical activity. Hurking the huge myrtlewood logs into a nice stack to split is a great lower back work out as well as squats. The weather is getting nicer here and it is definitly time to be outdoors. Woo Hoo!

Keith, make sure that you "log" (no pun intended) the chopping and hauling wood. I figure if it helps me to break a sweat, it ought to be logged.
I have begun riding my bike at least 14 miles and using free weights for 45 minutes first thing in the morning on the weekends and using the "room" at work. It seems to be paying off, I am down to 182 from about 200 in January.
Keep up the good work.

How's everyone doing on their fitness? I passed a milestone last week when I could fit into a size 34 jeans without them being tight. A couple a months ago I also passed a Corvette while riding my bike in a cemetary :) Of course he was only doing about 10 mph. I am down to around 175 and my chloresterol is almost within the proper limits, I have some work to do but I don't have to take drugs or eat Honey Nut Cheerios.
I am having so much fun doing this stuff, last night I rode my bike around in a cemetary while it was pitch black, never even been in a cemetary at night before, very cool.
So what's going on with youse guys (and gals)?

Well, I'm down three percentages of Body fat, but I haven't lost a pound... dammit.
I've gone through Bronze, Silver and Gold, and am just posting points until I can be down to wearing 36" ODU's. Some day...
