I'm more than willing to pay the subscription cost, hell I've got my credit card ready to go, but the link or instruction is dead...

Dennis/Stu, can either of you publish in an open thread how we would pay the subscription cost??

I believe that I just got it up and running. As you can see we've decided to only charge a subscription to the CPO Mess forum. Access to all other forums will remain unrestricted.

If you wish to access the CPO Mess forum just pay the subscription.
If you wish to make a donation just pay the subscription.

If you don't wish to pay the subscription, enjoy the other forums just as you always have.

It appears to be running. I just paid via paypal ... so Dennis, when you @tech-service.net you'll know it's me ... but not under my normal email.

Okay Dennis the link is working. But I was wondering what happened to all the threads that were in the forum before it became pay-per-post?

They are still there. Let me work on it for a few minutes, and I should be able to get you all set up.

Bruce,

I just got this from Dennis a few minutes ago ...

It tells you there is nothing there when you have not paid the subscription. Did you try to log in afterwards? If so, let's give it a little time to see if the mechanics just need to catch up.

I completely left the forums and signed back in with the same results.

I'm going to give him time to solve this "hic cup"

I manually changed you two. See if you have access and let me know.

Dennis,
I made the payment, but when I click on the Chiefs Mess, one thread shows up and I'm not allowed to edit, start a new thread etc...

I need another guinea pig.

What a choice of words... not the best I'd say....

I am also a little shocked that there was no advance notice as to how or when this was going to take place.. in fact, I still don't know how much it is, not that I'm planning on paying it... The only thing I saw in the "secure area" worth talking about was the Healy thread.....

You guys enjoy it..

Wray...

I was wondering what happened to all the threads that were in the forum before it became pay-per-post?

Well right now there are only 4 threads there and I started them all. Remarkably I was able to sign in before I paid. I wonder if that was like a hint to make sure I paid?

Wray, you may have a point about some of the things said behind the closed door, but I like this site and I see it as more of a general use donation than anything. I do like the idea of only having to pay to go behind the closed door for two reasons. One it kind of ensures that only members are gaining access and two it leaves the rest of the site free for those that don't feel it's worthy of paying for.

Dennis, I would still post a link and make it so people could make general donations - less than $24 than the membership is. I have also noticed way more timeouts over the past few days than ever before, does that have to do with changes being made or what?

Did you sign in using the admin password? If not, it may be that only the threads you started were visible to you.

You should now be able to view all of the threads.

I'm still working on getting things working correctly.

The timeouts are a host problem. I'm probably going to change to a different host. It is getting a little ridiculous.

Personally, I am not for or against this paid subscription option. Certainly, everyone deserves to be compensated for their efforts or cause.

Professionally, I can't see myself paying anyone/anything to provide my opinions relating to CG matters.

Fundamentally, I think you will divide and alienate portions of this Mess by these actions.

Just my unsolicited "Unvarnished Truth".

Kevin, from everything you said above it is quite obvious (to me) you are against the paid subscription, and feel it will damage the functions of the mess...

CMC Isherwood-
The board costs money to run and my time (and that of the administrator and moderators) have value. It is not unreasonable to set up the discussion board to pay for itself.

And, I remind you that the subscription only applies to the "CPO Mess" forum. Everything else is still free to the members.

However, if you truly feel that way, provide a CG sponsored alternative that can be funded by the service. That way, we can provide the same opportunity for voicing our opinions without the costs coming out of our pockets. I tried to do that when I was active duty, but got zero help.

You're in a position to make that happen. Up for the challenge?

CMC Isherwood

Wray,
Specifically I said, "everyone deserves to be compensated for their effort or cause" and basically I said, "my opinions aren't worth paying for", finally the free market will be the measure of the impact of this change.

BMCS Dennis Endicott (Ret),
I fully acknowledged that time and effort has a cost. Subscription fees for one thread or ALL are up to you, I'm good either way. In my "position", I need another challenge like I need another hole in my head. Throw that rock in someone else's bag, mine is full!

So folks that don't want to pay don't have a say? That is what it seems like to me. Why pay for an opinion? Why have one thread you have to pay for? Last time I checked we were one Chiefs Mess. I logged on to the CPO MESS and their wasn't anything worth paying for.

Just a free opinion.

Chris

Granted it will more than likely be the death of the CPO Mess forum, but I look at it as more of a way to make a donation to the site to help Keith keep it going.

Folks,

This isn't about paying to express one's opine, it's about donating money to keep the whole forum afloat and less of those annoying "errors" we've seen lately.

Would you donate a couple bucks a week for a coffee mess? Of course you would ... as we all have done in the past.

You donate a couple bucks a month to the CPOA ... Association for those who are still subscribers.

Are you standing member of the WIIFM crowd, where you must receive something tangible in return for your $2?

Donate ... don't donate. That's entirely up to you. Post on a thread or don't post on a thread ... that too is entirely up to you.

There are intangibles that could be well worth your two bucks. It will be up to you to decide if the price for those intangibles is too high.

Dennis:
How about us poor undercompensated retired folks.. Don't you think you should have an over 60 discount like my barber does? Seriously after a lot of thought, I agree with the CMC that nothing I have to say is worth the money. I do think however that somethings said here might be, and that the board itself it worth the money. I will be paying as soon as I can get to the bank and cash in my penny collection. I also think Wray (the double dipper) should fork up some cash also.

Hey Gary, have you forgotten everything that was said at our Retiree Meeting... you know, the one you & I had on the phone....

You obviously did, and since I don't want to embarrass you, maybe I will put it in the "CPO Mess" ;)

You retirees should have to Pay (or donate) "Extra"...seeing how you have all that "Extra" knowledge.

I guess it's all in your perspective.....I would have paid extra to hear what people like Gary, Wray, and Joe had to say.

Why don't you pay my fee and I will tell you everything I know. It should not take up too much of your time. For an extra few bucks I will also tell you everything Wray knows.

Gary,
Once again your memory has failed you...

Do you remember when we both made E-9.....?

Do you remember where you placed on the list..... ?

Do you remember where I placed on the list... ?:p

Do you remember who is SENIOR to you for LIFE!

I hope that refreshed things for you.....

The only seniority you have over me is your birthday! :p

With all that in mind, Stu, just pay for me & I'll help you out with Gary's thoughts... We usually discuss them quite often... and when he moves to Florida, I'll probably just let him use my computer...

Gary, let me get with Dennis and I'll work out the details. It would be worth my investment just to hear about the GREENBRIER.
