Most know that I am involved with the research and writing of CG History. There are many myths that permeate the Coast Guard about its past and this may be a good place for some knowledgable CPOs to put the record straight.

That's an excellent idea Bill.

Bill,
Great idea. Hopefully Admin will create an Area where we can learn and discuss CG History.

Couldn't you just pick a forum and start a related thread?

I too think it is a great idea and deserves its own area.

I concur, CG History and passing it on to our junior people is an important part of our job as Chiefs. If it is a separate thread in "The Anchorage" it may get bypassed if a post hasn't been made in a few weeks.

That is a possiblity, but I have found in the past that intertwined discussions and historical comments get lost after awhile and people have to search for them. An individual area may offer a resource for which people may refer from time to time.
I know in the past I have had emails from new chiefs asking for information.
I would be a good place to dispell some of those myths that seem to endure.

Also a great place for PCPO's to find articles on the history they need for their CCTI chargebooks. Introduce them to the Unvarnished Truth as well. Kind of like that survey that got MC Wells and MC Gillette here. :D ;) :D

I saw a great show on the Military Channel the other night about the CG in Vietnam. Did a big story on the PT WELCOME with BMC Patterson. I was tasked to research him at my CCTI and it put it in perspective seeing him now and what really happened :)

Did you see my handsome face in it? If you want the whole story on Point Welcome read this.

If you're ever up on Cape Cod, stop in and meet Master Chief Mark McKenney at his home in Harwich. He is donating his land (and the Vietnam/Bruckenthal Memorial he made last summer) to the Coast Guard. He was on the Point Welcome when the friendly fire attack occured.
Great to hear his stories and try some of his Cape Cod Jellies and Jams. He'll even show you a piece of the Point Welcome's mast that has some bullet holes.
Mack winters in Florida, but shows back up on the Cape in the Spring.
Here's the CG History site with some more info
