By default I started collecting challenge coins. It started with two coins on my desk, people kept giving me some, and units I have been assigned to have started giving out coins. I recently had one made for Station Chatham.

I found Northwest Territorial Mint is now making the rank and qualification coins for all Coast Guard Rates, Qualifications, and commemoratives. Make a good advancement gift, although I know some CPOA chapters sell coins also.

Thought I would pass along if someone is interested. I found their coins on EBAY with cheaper shipping costs, but if you buy more than one from NWT mint you may save on shipping there.

They also have a pretty good Katrina Coin if you went down there for the relief efforts.

I am also a challenge coin collector, I have about 100 different ones. Some are very unique and some tell a story (usually best told with a beer).

The NW Territorial Mint coins are probably the best I've seen. I like the ones with the insignias, what a great idea to give out when our people achieve those milestones!

Also, this is a great company if you are having coins made because they don't charge some of the set-up fees that other companies charge.

With this opportunity, I have to put in a plug for the "Petty Officer Advancement Coin" that the MT Hood Chapter of the CPOA sells. It is a great way to recognize that new Petty Officer. Check out the link below for informtion. The POC has changed her last name. It's now SKC Dawn Yolton.

NWT is also the company that makes the Chief Petty Officer Academy coins.

They now use a foreign mint (China) for some coins to keep the costs down, but they do still make some here in the US. For the station coin we payed $260 for the die fee, once you pay that they keep the die for a certain period and as long as you reorder coins you don't have to pay the die fee again. The coins themselves depend on if you have colors, enamel, edging etc. The cost can be as low as $3 up to $6 a coin. Shipping and handling was included with the coin cost. I looked around at other companies, but the quality didn't seem as good. The whole process took less than a month and we had the coins.

Here's the finished product

We just had unit coins made for STORIS. Anyone have one from Bramble or Acacia or Diligence they want to trade?

Ok, sounds like we need to set up some kind of Coin Trader.

I would like to get my hands on a Bramble coin, after all my name is Brumble.

the Baltimore Chapter of the CPOA has coins. If anyone would like to trade, send me an email, work or here. Even swap, just send it out.

I started collecting coins when I got initiated, I now have around 30. I would like to get my hands on more chapter and unit coins. So please, let me know.

:D

The local CG exchange has started to carry the North West Territorial Mint and has all the coins - I think they are 6.99 - much cheaper than the lowest EBAY price I have seen of $8.50 plus shipping.

Great way to recognize advancements or certifications.

I like that coin. I have some from my last unit CGC Munro and was wondering if you would consider a trade. You can reach me at
William.F.Allen@uscg.mil if you want to trade.
