I am thinking about enrolling in SOCCOAST. Does anyone use it? If so, have you had any problems with it? What has been your experience?

What do you mean by enrolling in SocCoast? From what I understand (and could be wrong), SocCoast is when the college agrees to all the guidelines that say they will accept each other's credits. A member may enroll in a college that participates in SocCoast, but not SocCoast itself. That being said, I've used a couple of colleges in the system (St. Leo's and Coastline) with no problems. Coastline has a really cool program that is run on PDAs. The member does all his/her coursework on a PDA, no internet connection needed. After 3 classes, the member gets to keep the PDA.
Good Luck,
Chris

Chris, thanks for the info, I just wanted to find out how people like the system. It sounds pretty good to me, I like the option of having online courses. I only need 15 more credits to get my Associates, I will be able (or should be able to) CLEP at least two of the courses.

Love your quote.

Ray,

I used a SOCOAST college and have just completed the requirements for my Associates from Thomas Edison State College. Just be sure that when you register whoever you use is a member of SOCOAST and it is also helpful if they offer a MDCP, military degree completion program. I did mine as guided study courses and had no problems. I did have have a few issues with the admin staff at TESC , but quickly got that straightened out. The main reason I went with them, for mine was they gave me the most credit toward my degree. I'm looking at starting working toward my bachelors after transfer this summer but am not sure if I will use TESC or someone else, good luck in your education goals.

Todd, congrats on the orders. At least your headed to the correct side of I-5. I'm still in a holding pattern and standing by to stand by. Gotta love our system.

Have any of you (or someone you know) used University of Maryland University College (UMUC) for online classes? I'm looking for any positives or negatives.

Thanks for any input.

BMCS,

Looks fairly pricy, they charge you for every transfer credit (I may be reading the chart incorrectly though)

http://www.umuc.edu/studserv/tuition/tuition_spring07_ug.html

$30 for enrollment
$250 for assesment
$90 PER credit transfered

I would imagine that if you have done the assessment from the Institute, you might have a substantial amount of credits at your disposal. This could add up to big coin out of your pocket.

On the positive side, they charge $230 per credit for classes ($230x3=$690). the average I have found is $250, with Excelsior being at the low end ($215 per credit) and the college I am going to now (www.rivier.edu) on the higher end at $275 per credit.

I have not used University of Maryland University College, but I currently use Staint Leo University and I have been very happy with them for on-line courses. They also have campuses in several cities near military bases. If you have further questions on St. Leo anyone can give me a call. 516-466-7136

Ron...I plan to call the UMUC SOC advisor this week. I can't imagine that they charge for credit transfer's...wouldn't that defeat the purpose of being a SOC school?

You can go online to see what colleges are SOCOAST participants. Each service has their own agreements with the various colleges, many are bilateral. However some are not. Just because a college works with the Army doesn't gaurantee the CG has an agreement established with the same institution. If I remember correctly, there is CGSOCOAST, NAVSOCOAST, ARMSOCOAST, etc.

I'm with Thomas Edison. I have one class left to conquer and I'll be done (College Alg w/Trig or Calc). I saved the hardest one for last!
