I was checking out an article on the D7 public affairs website and read this article about Master Chief Roger "Buck" Ward and I was thinking how cool would it be to have him as a member. If anyone knows him, could you please extend an invitation for him to join? I would assume he might be interested seeing how one of his retirement plans is to write a book. I also think that given his time in service he would have a lot to offer us and could even act as a liaison between some of the been retired for a while/recently retired/ and active duty Chiefs.
Even if no one knows him in order to invite him, it's a good article to read and a great accomplishment to recognize.

I had the distinct honor of serving with Master Chief durring his last tour in Miami. The Coast Guard lost a lot of history and knowledge when he retired. I have a number for him and will see if I can touchbase with him to extend the invite.

Kinda off topic.... How does someone get the nickname "BUCK". One of the more influential Chiefs I ever had the pleasure of serving with was a BMC "Buck" Willoughby. I never did know his first name though.

Brandon, thanks, I hope he joins!
SJ, I am not sure but it's probably one of those simple answers. I can tell you that Captain America's side kick's name was, "Bucky." Not sure if that helps.

SJ, my grandfather was called Buck his entire life. His name was Raymond. I have no idea why everyone called him Buck. Never did ask him before he died, and no one left living has an answer. His full name was Raymond Eulan Wickett. He signed everything R.E. Buck Wickett.
Sorry for continuing to take this thread off from its original topic.

Master Chief Ward was the Judge at my CCTI. I remember going to his office to get words of wisdom, Very well spoken and low key. He gave me a lot to think about, I got the impression that he didn't need to use harsh words or raise his voice, although he was small in stature he seemed to be a giant of a man and Chief. IMHO.
Master Chief if you ever read this, Thanks and good luck in your retirement.

I just met him last Thursday at the GRU Port Angeles Chapter CCTI. I sent him an e-mail with this web site. We will see if he becomes a member.

If he is a BM, old BM's were called Buck O Mates when ships were wood

Unfortunately, in the 19th century sailing merchant marine a Buck-O mate meant one who was extremely hard on his crew, the ones no one wished to sail with. At Captain Healy's 1880 trial for cruelty, the defense tried to get seamen to call him a Buck-O officer.
Sorry to bring history into this.

John,
Why not write Ward and tell him he is a Vietnam wacko too? He was a FN on a 255.
Besides, someone retiring at 40 or more years used to fairly common. At one point the three GMCMs averaged 44 years each.
