ok, those who know me know I am not one to brag and those who really know me, know that's a totally false statement, but check out the photos at http://www.d7publicaffairs.com/

I didn't start this thread to just show off my unit or aor, so by all means if you have some work photos or a website to link to, have at it!

Thought I would revive this thread.

Attached are pictures of my boat in Colfax (64' ANB). There are only three of these in the CG, we usually run with 4-6 people, and are U/W 5-12 days at a time. Boat basically operates in the same manner as a River Tender, works both pooled and non-pooled waters, and spuds down every night.

Great duty!

Ian,

Those are cool boats, too bad they are not 1' longer huh? Well I have now seen all 3 - two in photos and the other in Corpus. Having been on two construction tenders, I know how nice it is to have spuds.

I still don't know if I would want to trade the 21.5 knots I can get out of the 55' for them though. Now if there were a way I could get a small barge for it or a spud installed, that would be awesome!

Deane, is that for workstation or stand alone? I have a ras token that I was using from the house before the most recent upgrade (downgrade). Cellular sounds like the way to go for cutters.

It's stand alone. We bought a (cheap) morale laptop that the crew can use. Most of them have laptops and bring them u/w. We keep the morale laptop on the bridge and check weather, river information, etc.

It's really been great for morale. If the crew wants to take some online classes, they can do it inport and u/w.

We cover 638 river miles and have good coverage almost everywhere.

My family did 2 years of my career there while I traveled out of state as much as possible. I actually think California is a nice place to visit. That is just me though. Well Wray, having done both, (actually an 82 in California), I would say that is a pretty hard choice. I would choose to do both again. The left coast is pretty challenging, after a tour on a WPB in northern California I assure you that you will be ready for a Riverboat. Both are interesting and fun tours.

Steve...there's more to the story, but it's much funnier after a couple of beers (or R/C's Wray). It involves the entire family trailering the boat and I'll just leave it at that.

I think the bigger question is why has John kept his picture since 1998? Hmmm...

BMCS Jim Madsen
04-11-2007, 09:54 PM
John, I was at both those round-up's. XPO on ANVIL. I think I remember seeing you on a paint float as we left Canaveral. Both round-up's were a hoot. Was it Maxon that used to say: "There are two things that you will never see in my hands; one is a golf club..." ?

BMC John Phillips III
04-11-2007, 11:33 PM
Jim I wasn't part of the paint float brigade, but I have a picture of the secret squirrel ops that took place the night before that lead to their little expedition. I guess that takes away my plausable deniability but I do believe the statute of limitations applies to stenciling other cutters' hulls.

I remember hearing the same saying at the round up as well and have even used it a time or two myself since (not a fan of golf), but I thought it was the Senior Chief off your boat that said it. I know for sure it was a Senior Chief, not sure which one.

Here's the pic (also 7 or 8 years old) it's hard to see but there's a guy hanging from the facing cables and another on the barge getting ready to do something with a can of spray paint, I thought they were just chasing some running rust - but I knew it wasn't on our boat ;)

I believe the facing cables outboard of ours belonged to your cutter.

Yes the FS was pregnant and believe me the having tattoo's doesn't mean anything bad about a person, but means something to the person that got the tattoo for what ever reason. Wray, so what you're saying is you like sexy grandmas? :p

Seriously, to each their own as you put it, I don't think this is the appropriate venue to be determining how sexy we find each other's wives. Of course, I don't think there is a venue for that at all, but I have run into a coastie or two that totally wouldn't have a problem with it  I am just not one of them.

I'm not trying to discuss other peoples wives.....I clarified my comment concerning the FS, and made a statement about my wife.. as far as I'm concerned, end of story...

After all, this was about the tattoo, not the person.

Wray...

P.S. Were you at the AtoN class (in Canaveral) taught by Randy Maxson?? He and I go back a long way too... I did meet the CO of HUDSON (& several others) at Captain Jett's retirement.

I was at the Round up, yes, in fact the pictures of the 55 from page 7 of this thread were taken there. Mr. Maxson taught a navruls class there, so no, I was not in his class. However, we were able to touch base. He is obviously doing pretty well and enjoying his retirement.

Thanks for the picture! That's great. I'm not real sure who's idea that whole IMARV thing was, but I'm glad it's over. She's now got a nice coat of black on her skin once again.

The window is not a problem, I can deal with it. There are only two people in the office, me and a civilian file clerk.

We'll see about the Broncos.

Great picture Art! Still too cold for me! brrrrrr

On a side bar, anyone seen the movie Deja Vu? anyone seen the movie Deja Vu? Ok, that was bad - lol - but I couldn't resist.

Seriously though, there is a lot of CG visibility in it. Most notably the two 55's! I was in New Orleans while they were doing the 55 seens but could only see them with the bino's. Still pretty cool.

Kevin, are you saying after a 20 year military career you are a co pilot on a 747? You musta been a reservest...

What airline?

Still a great job... My Father was a Captain with American... Still have many relatives flying... just lost my cousin who was a Capt. with Air Canada... his brother is a Capt with US Air, and my college roommate is a Capt with AA.

I often wish I had finished college... :(

Wray,
No I spent a full 20 years on Active Duty. I was delayed enlisted when I was 17 so I retired at 37. Spent most of my time in Kodiak although I had two tours in Sacramento. Retired in 1996 and flew for Southern Air Transport for a while. Have been flying for Atlas since 1999.

I had a layover in HNL a couple of days ago and had the honor and real privilege of attending the Honolulu Chiefs Mess CCTI dinner with AMTCS Mark Pritchard. While we were visiting he told me of the passing away of MK2 Travis Catts who is the son of AEC John Catts (RET). I was searching the net for more info on Travis and came across this site.

Nice to meet you all.

Thanks Wray but don't be. It's just a job like any other although I do get to fly with a few fellow Coast Guard retirees.

Had more fun and learned more in the CG specially on some of those late night searches - but that was when I was young and unappreciative.
