Saw this on Fred's Place, someone also posted a link to his MySpace page. My first reaction after looking at the article and the MySpace page is that he is a textbook steroid user. Looks like he was trying to go AST.

Here's his MySpace page

AWOL Coast Guardsman arrested after making bomb threats at Key West airport

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies have arrested an AWOL (Absent without official leave) U.S. Coast Guardsman, after he caused a disturbance at Key West International Airport Thursday morning.

Here is what police said happened at around 11:30 a.m. when airport deputies noticed a man in a Coast Guard uniform exhibiting very nervous behavior:

While keeping the man under observation, two Coast Guard officers arrived at the airport and took the man into custody, stating he was AWOL. The man then bolted from the Coast Guard officers as they tried to get him into their car. He ran into the airport terminal, shouting several times that he had placed a bomb in the car and that "everyone was going to die."

Airport deputies stepped in and took the man into custody, charging him with disorderly conduct and making bomb threats. The Coast Guardsman, identified as 20-year old Jeremy P. Hood stationed aboard the cutter Mohawk, was taken to the County Detention Center where he was booked into jail on the charges.

I don't think steroids is the culprit, check this quote one of his "buddies" left for him:

Sup dude! you remember that one time when we snuck into my grandparents hard liquor cabinet. Then after we chugged all that E&J like it was water we blazed it up in you small ass geo! That shit was nutz man, hahaha. Then we were all hung over and high for chistmas day and I ended up passing out in church and flopped over one of those church pews and scared everyone. LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Myspace is the big thing right now and there are tons of young Coasties on there. I am not suggesting anything, but you would be surprised to see what some of them have posted on their pages.

Oh yes the My Space connection. But before you go on looking be ready for what you might find. I know I was shocked to see what the kids, both at home and work are posting.

The reason I say steroids is there was another member a couple of years ago that had to be taken out of his car at gunpoint after driving through town bumping off cars. The cop that pulled him out of the car was trained in steroid detection and told the Coast Guard the guy was definitely on steroids, it produces some odd behavior. We tested the guy for steroids and he came back positive. The guy in Florida said he was "5'8", body builder" and from the look of the picture and his odd behavior he fits the profile to a tee.

I think the steroid problem is bigger than most people think, since you can't see it on the typical urinalysis there probably is alot more people on it than we think.

Bruce, did I read your post correctly? Did you actually use the word "kid" when talking about the young people you work with? Where would you ever come up with that, maybe Dennis.

Well Nick it's all about the context in which you use the word. Mines pretty easy to figure I guess, but then again I am a Boatswains Mate. How did you use it? Or should we wait for Dennis to weigh in....

Bruce, I agree its all in the situation and how we use a term like "kid". And no, I have no desire to wait for Dennis to chime in. I think I know the outcome of that already.

The steroid issue is a big problem. One of the members that transferred last year went to MLE academy for BO school. Prior to going to school he was told he was going to a new duty section and was ordered to change lockers. Needless to say, he idn't and so the CO had granted permission to cut his lock off his old locker to move his gear to the locke he was suppose to move to. Guess what they found? Needles and steroids. Does anyone know if steroids is tested as part of a random urinalysis test? I use to take Xendrine before the message came out banning the use of ephedrine. I used it a part of my weight control program. Since then have gained 15 lbs. But not worth my career even if they don't test for it. The young men today don't even try to hide it. Tells me we need to do more to prevent and deter the use.

Steroids are an ugly problem.

We have "role models" who are skirting the edges of it in Major League Baseball, and there is a cloud of suspicion hanging over Lance Armstrong using performance enhancing substances. For those of us old enough to remember, how about Lyle Alzedo (Oakland/LA Raiders) who ultimately died of overuse of steroids.

When society accepts this as "appropriate" and turns a blind eye in order to get that performance edge or to look like the model on the cover of Men's Health we condone this practice.

Will we get to the point where we will have to publish a list of banned substances and require our crew to submit to testing after every mission, like is done in the Olympics?

Can you imagine this, "Hey, your boatcrew just went through a 14 hour evolution to search for and assist a disabled fishing boat 100 miles off shore and you don't look too tired, here pee in this cup to see if you used performance enhancing substances to complete the mission."

It is definitely NOT part of the regular urinalysis testing. A separate urine sample is taken and sent to the UCLA Olympic laboratory at cost of something like $275 a piece. You really need to have a good idea that the member is on steroids.

Our( the CG's) Program doesn't even meet the minimum standards under the DOT set forth in 49 CFR for those employed in the marine or transportation industries.
