Apparently my pic is too large to paste into here so I will have to have my wife resize it for me so I can post the pic of my Kodiak Brown Bear taken 5-15-05 on the Road System here in Kodiak last year. He squared out at 9 foot 9 inches.

Jayare,
Your bear keeps getting bigger last time you said it was 8'9" not 9'9". :D HAHAHAH.

Chief Parker,
Excuse my ignorance, but when you say "taken on the road system", does this mean you got a rather large road-kill

FSC Jayare Parker (Ret)
06-15-2006, 03:41 AM
You could pretty much say that. The road system is anywhere you can drive to on the Island and hunt (not having to fly out to somewhere else on the Island or take a boat to). I was driving out the road about 30 miles from town and there he was walking in the road. I pulled my truck over, got my gun out, loaded it, got over to the side of the road (because you can not shoot on or accross the drivable surface in Alaska) then I waited for the bear to step off of the road then I let him have it.

Jeff: I never said he squared out at 8'9". (I know my bear is about 3 inches smaller than the bear you got, but at least I didn't have to go back the next day to retrieve him. Ha Ha) :D and besides that neither of us have a wall big enough to hang them on either. :(

That DOES rock!!

What did you use to bag him? My cousin goes out with an M-1911 .45 caliber phucking PISTOL!!!

Sorry, for something like that - I ain't BUDGING with less than an M-249 or better. Hell, M2, .50 caliber machine guns even!! If you are off on your aim, they get PISSED!! :D

Took him from about 70 yards with a 300 win mag. It was 0730 on a Sunday morning the last day of the spring bear season and I was all by myself. I had to call my wife to get her to call some people to come out and give me a hand (and take pics too). :D I had to float the bear down that stream about 100 yards and I got him rolled over 3 times to the edge of the water before my helpers arrived 2 hours later. After they got there we only had to roll him 1 and a half more times to get him out of the water where that picture was taken so I could start the skinning session.

What part of Upstate was it in? That place is just crazy with deer. I don't hunt and can't stand the thought of killing something in the wild just for the antlers, etc. Besides I'm no Wyatt Earp.

Your deer accident is just the reason I have no problem with hunting, I would rather them end up being on someone's table than being killed by a car or starving to death.

Pa. had a report a couple of years ago that had three deer killed on the highway for every two taken by hunters. I know alot of people who keep antlers. I know a couple who mount the whole head. But everyone I know who hunts, eats the meat. I don't hunt, never have. But I think that you should be allowed to take as many as you're willing to eat. And they should extend the season. Developing the land has eliminated many of the natural predators and replaced them with motorists. Hunting protects the motorists.

I watched him for about a hour his was just eating away. Also saw a lot of deer sign. I love Alaska hope I can stay here for ever!!!!!!!!!!

It's kinda wierd how we take so many things for granted. I mean we Alaskans see Bald Eagles Every Day up here and quite often think nothing of it, then we see the cruise ships and such pull in here and see all the tourists lined up on the side of the road taking picture after picture of the Eagles because most likely that could be the first Eagle they have ever seen in their life.

There's not many things cooler than seeing a Bald Eagle swoop down to a river right in front of you and grab a salmon with it's claws and fly away.

BMC John Phillips III

Funny we have a pictures of Bald Eagles in a thread that is named, "hunting pictures." I get the context of the picture, I just thought it was funny.

I've seen dozens of Eagles on the Hudson river and a few in Tx and Fl as well. I know they are much more abundant in AK, but if you look hard enough elsewhere, you might find some.

Well it has finally started the much anticipated Alaska hunting season. I know that the horns on the blacktails arn't as big as the Mulies and Whitetails but it is still fun to go after the big buck up here. I took my wife yesterday and got her a nice 4 by 5 or at least it would have been when he rubbed off his velvet in a few weeks. Hope I can find one for my daughter and myself as big but even a forked horn will taste good this winter.

Just letting everyone know deer season up here in Kodiak, AK getting kicked off with a bang(just think there are still four months to go). I took my daughter out on the 8th and saw two deer, both bucks. We made a great stalk on them and got within 100 yrds. Kayti got set to shoot but the scope on her .243 was all fogged up (rifle bought use with scope. I am going to get a good scope for next year) so she had to use dad's 30-06 to kill it. She got set, I explained where to aim for and she let one fly dropping it in it's bed. She did a great job. I will post pictures when I am at home. It was a little fork not as big as her moms this year but one of these days she may want to go after a bigger one. When she can keep up with dad that is. :D

BMCM Stuart S. Slesh

Jeff, I'm lost........ your wife got a deer, and your daughter got a deer.........and you're suggesting that they can't keep up with you.........? Sounds to me like they're just keeping you around for the heavy lifting.

FSC Jeff Stumpf
08-15-2006, 01:20 PM
My wife can keep up but my daughter is only 11 so I can't take her where the big boys hang out. Hopefully in a couple of years she will be ready. Luckily there are a lot of deer around here so finding a easy hunt is, well, easy. And yes I think that is why my wife keeps me her deer was heavy. I am still feeling the affects of that pack. Just kidding :D

MSTCM Jerald Motyka
12-14-2006, 11:56 PM
Dang Senior!! Niiiiiiiice shooting!! I've always used duck feet as a scale for how badly they were mangled... if the feet are broken, they are so peppered with shot that they can't be cleaned and eaten. You don't have a broken foot in sight! Bravo!

What's that to port, a teal?

How do they figure limits where you are at? In Wisconsin it was points, and a single mallard drake would put you just under the daily limit... but you could get five hens a day. Go figure!

Anyway, nice shooting.

Any new hunting pictures from the hunting season?

I have a pic of Jeff and one of the deer he got (6 pointer) and another pic of the deer my son got (5 pointer) when Jeff was with him. Myself and another CPO were in a slightly different area hunting when Jeff and my son hooked up with their deer back in October out behind the CommSta here in Kodiak.

Whenever I can find the pictures from that hunt I will post them. I seem to have misplaced them somewhere between work and home. I'm still looking for them.

That's a lesson for everybody; don't send a bear hide to a high school buddies second cousin by marriage. JP17, what are you doing in the critter killing section? I thought you were a true blue Peta member?
The caribou I shot this year was in full rut plus he was the herd leader that was putting the whoopin on the rest of the bulls so his meat was pretty stinky and down right hard to eat. The mountain goat really is the best wild game to eat.
Jayare, I ended up sending my wifes goat to Eric up here and expect it back sometime in 09 I bet. Got an extension up here not a new tour. Seems the the detailer thinks I need to head down to the states in 09.

Time to bear the bad news....I will not be able to share any hunting pictures from this season. I pulled my last stint in the woods this past weekend (Sat thru Mon) and didn't get to pull the trigger. I saw probably about a total of 10 deer through the 3 days, but wasn't able to get a comfortable shot on any of them without a chance of wounding them.

Oh, well....I guess this why its called hunting and not killing! :D

At least I had a backstrap from my buddies buck that I just finished cutting up into steaks a few minutes ago. I'll be firing up the grill for dinner....can't wait!

Looks like I'll have to learn a new game for next year. I'll be in Ohio (where the deer get HUGE!), but I'll have to keep my rifles locked up....time to get a compound bow and keep the yardage under 40 versus the 200+ I can do now down here in southern 'Bama.

Anyone have any good northern Ohio hunting spots they would like to share?? :D

Seth,

I wouldn't do that.

I've had a great year hunting. I got 9 deer and a moose. I gave all the deer away. The pic of me and the two deer is a unique one. That was a twofer. One shot, two deer. I've never done that before. Everything lined right up. I even recovered the bullet just under the hide of the second deer. The hawk pics are from the backyard.

I was out Tuesday night in the stand and had 4 come by but they were a little too small. One of my co-workers asked for a deer. I didn't want him to spend any processing money on small ones. Today is the last day of archery season so I might try to zip one tonight.:D The deer are very edgy these days.

I've got a few other pics laying around. Maybe I'll post them later.

Seeing as though I don't have a trail cam, I figured that my hiking boots and the old faithful digital camera would work. These are all pics from just an hour ago out behind my house. The first set was a buck and doe at about 40 yards. They got curious of me and moved in to within 15 yds trying to figure out what I was.

Sorry for the blurriness on the first group...my excitement was through the roof! And the dark pic is the buck, I tried the flash but what do I know about photography??

50lbs disodium phosphate
100lbs Trace mineral salt
50lbs stock salt

Mix together 1 part disodium, 2 parts trace, 1 part stock and lay out where you want to bring 'em in and feed 'em good!

Once I get the licks established I'll post picks...

Well just got back from Eastern Oregon, had a nice shot a a big eastern oregon mule deer buck, but was a little too excited and didnt manage to take my time with the shot and missed him. Looked over to my left and this little tasty morsel (spike) was standing broad side, right after shooting at the big racked buck. Decided I better atleast fill my tag. Wasnt quite as big as yours John, but was a big big buck. Nicer 4 x 4. With dark heavy horns(the one I missed) Such is life.

I had a nice shot at a 5 x 5 bull elk also and muffed that up too. I asked him for a mulligan but he wasnt having nothing to do with that. These giant critters have a way with making me miss. It was a fifty yard shot, but I had practiced it many times, it's just different when that big old bull is standing there.

Congrats on the deer. Was that Silver Lake unit?

I have missed plenty of deer from nerves or just plan not concentrating like I should have. Last year was bad for me. This year I'm 4 for 4. I had a spike and a 4 or 6 in front of me last night but did not shoot them. We have to wait till next the 15th before we can shoot small bucks on the one place I hunt. John: Yep you nailed it, Silver Lake Unit. I hunted with some guys that have been hunting there for thirty years now. I may go back next year. Seems like we found a place that holds deer for some reason. It burned 6 years ago and has some nice food sources for them. I just rushed the shot on the big buck should have slowed down a little and everything would have been fine. Been a long time since I had seen a buck that big. It has been two years since I have harvested anything, I didnt even hunt last year.

As for good muzzle loader, the T/C Encore is a great gun; however, for about half the price is the the T/C Omega. I just bought one of these a few weeks ago and it is great. Out of the box with open sights (really good ones) at 100 yds it was 3" high and dead on windage. two shots later it was dead on at 100. 6 shots total. I then put it away until this week at which point I shot a 6 point Sunday morning and a doe Tuesday evening to tag out in Oklahoma. First shot was 120yds, droped in tracks, second deer was 95 yds, droped in tracks. shooting 100 grains of triple 7 (two 50 grain pellets, and a 230 grain sabbot). This gun rocks, as much as I like bows and rifles this thing is the cats ass.

My wife Carleen wanted to get a Kodiak brown bear this year so I went out behind our house and started scouting. Figured this ones routine, so out we went, second evenings hunt so got it with her .338. You should see a .338 push a 105lb female around, pretty funny. Thanks Guys,
She shot it on a hill and it rolled to where I could ride the quad to it. That quad has had a few bears on it huh, Jeff. I didn't take my caribou rack in to get measured when the guy was in town but I might next fall.
I was hunting with Ropella last week and he got a 9'7" bear. It's skull measured 27 9/16. Darn thing almost had us for lunch. We were tracking it through alders and it was crouched down in it's trail facing us just awaiting. We got within 12 paces of it before we saw it's head move a little. Got hairy but he made a great shot that paralyzed both its rear legs so it was easy to dispatch after that.
The deer got hit hard last winter but you know that, the bucks weren't really out and moving until the rut and seeing how I ain't got my bow permit I am just watching them walk around.

I sat the stand yesterday afternoon and saw 3 while hiking thru the woods. Nothing but a bunch of turkey from the stand. I have only 9 days left of the season and plan on hitting it hard to fill my remaining tags.

Hopefully I'll have pics to post of a successful afternoon!

The first one wasnt as easy as using a tractor, it was way up a logging road I couldnt get the F-250 7.3 Liter diesel up. But I did get my Grizzly 700 up there and managed to hook up after almost swamping it in a muddy bog, then hooking it up and dragging it the whole way back to where my truck was. It was quite a feat for my four wheeler. I thought I was going to blow it up. Up the hills and down the next. That four wheeler is worth its wait in gold when you got a huge critter like that down. Well some where, where you can use it anyhows. It was about a 1.5 mile drag through the mud and rocks on the grown over logging road. But it didnt end there. Then I hooked a strap up and across the front of the bed of the truck and hooked a snatch block up to that. I put my four wheeler ramp down, slid the rope over the block, drove the opposite direction and finally got it up into the truck up my four wheeler ramp, it is still a mess. It sure wasnt that easy at all.

The second one we got was a lot easier. It ran down to the field and died. Then I pulled up with four wheeler and drug it through the swampy parts of field back close to truck, where we used the tractor this time to load it up. Whew. I dropped that sucker off at the local butcher shop taking a few choice cuts out of it and skinning it. Spendy but well worth the time saved.

The wife and I have been doing alot of ELK canning lately. We're having ELK burgers on the grill tonight.

No luck for me today. I saw a huge doe about 200yds out that never came any closer. I about froze to death today out there in the tree! I'll try again tomorrow, and if nothing, then I guess I'll hang up the bow for a few months!:(

Got this one last week, got five fox so far this year with my partner bagging a couple. We finally figured out the way to call them in and actually hit them. I use a .17HMR and my partner uses a .22 mag. The .22 passes through them but the .17 blows apart inside em' and stays there. Something to keep us busy and still hunting now that there is nothing else to hunt. Plan on stuffing this one myself but making a blanket out of the rest of them.
Jayare, I finally got those fox tanned that you left here from Attu and plan on adding those to the blanket.

Hey Ed nice fox old friend. I did some trapping in Sitka, man was it fun. I bet trapping those foxes would be fun too. I havent trapped since then. The Pine Marten were bringing a nice price and still are. I have heard about those cross foxes and how many of em their are over that way. That sounds like a lot of fun.

I am currently scouting for Bears my hunting partner wants to get one. We have a couple of cameras out now, waitng for themt o start moving. Will start checking the cameras tomorrow. Going high up into Weyerhauser land.

Hey Ed,

I think I got your partner's pics (Greg) the other day at home. He told me about the call you guys used. He sent me a nice pelt a couple of years back. He and I went to high school together back in the mid-70's.

Hey Keith,
Thanks, sure wish I could go on another bear hunt but I got the nix from my wife. Seems like she didn't appreciate the fact that my partner and I touched his 9'6" squared brown bear before it was dead. He shot it from above and hit it's spine and paralized it's back legs so it couldn't turn around and munch us so we just touched it's rear. (not the best idea it seems) Just a note, after he shot it with his .44 mag twice in the boiler maker from 2 yds it was still staring at us wishing it could eat us. I reckon carrying a pistol is really just a "make me feel better thing".
Anyway good luck on your hunt.

Hey Ed,
How's it going? That's a real nice looking fox you got there. Where did you go hunting at to get them?
How did those foxes I left you turn out? Mine turned out kinda stiff so I am going to soak them again and redry them and see how they turn out then.

I posted a website that you could get your cam cards loaded with free software that will send you an email with the computers IP address everytime someone puts it into a card reader. You can then track down the IP address to see who opened it up.

This is not a hunting picture, but here is a nice steelhead that I caught today behind my house. Its about a 2 mile 4 wheeler ride to the creek, and my daughter and I have the fishing all to ourselves! The second picture with my daughter is her steelhead from this past weekend at the same creek!

When I started I went and bought three decoys and a double slate over glass call. Downloaded some wav files of turkey calls and sat at my computer till I sounded like the computer. Then I went to the farm in Mississippi sat the decoys out started calling and immediately got a response. I had a Hen turkey come into to me calling from 200 yds away I watched her the whole time. it was pretty neat and enough to hook me. A few years between now and then though. Since I have learned about locator calls and where to look for them roosting and getting close for the fly down cackles. It is pretty exciting to me. Nothing like coaxing a big ole gobbler into fill view strutting and gobbling, gets the adrenaline going pretty good. Oh and forgot to mention, dont move a muscle, their eye sight is way better than ours, anything out of the ordinary and they are gone.

This particular bird wouldnt get that close. he was pretty wary, so I banged him at about 50 yds with a Remington #4, 3.5 inch magnum. My hunting buddy couldnt believe I made that shot. It is a great time to be outdoors.

Ya...I've hunted them for quite a few years. In fact I was out Saturday with a shotgun. The other place I hunt is bow only so it's a bit more of a challenge. I had a jake come into the decoys a few Saturdays back but he didn't like the strutting tom I had out so he wouldn't come in close enough for a bow shot.

Welcome aboard Jeff, and what a great last name...

John, It's pretty easy to make a deer bleep call. All you need is about 2 inches of a broomstick, split it in half, file out a small section in the middle of both halves, stretch a piece of electrical tape lengthwise accross one of the halves then tape the two ends up and blow in one end. (Before taping up both ends you will want to try it out a few times till you find the right humm your looking for then tape up both ends. Try blowing on both sides in case one side sounds better than the other. I drew an arrow on mine for the direction of flow because one side sounded better than the other.) You can hold it in your mouth hands free and blow it while taking aim at your deer, stops them in their tracks up there in Alaska.

An old GM2 country boy buddy from West by God Virginia showed me how to make these when we were underway. Only takes about 10 mins to make.

Thanks fella's. John, if you're intetrested I can send you one. Not sure about the broomstick idea ( although it sounds interesting ). I spin all my stuff up on a wood lathe. It's a hobby more or less but has become an addiction. I had several folks use my turkey call this spring in VA & NC and the results were great for them. I missed all of the '08-09 deer, duck/goose, and turkey season due to being U/W. I'm looking forward to this season though. I anticipate alot of dead stuff!

I'll play with that and see what happens. As of late when I want to stop a deer for a shot I'll just grunt with my mouth and that often works. If I did it right, I'll already have the drop on them and will be releasing with 2-3 seconds. I rattled and grunted this one in blind last year. I caught movement to my right after a series of grunts and rattles. I drew back and followed it in right behind my tree stand. It stopped, looked up and that was about it. Maybe 13-15 yards out.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y32/John623/100_1172.jpg

This one from last year came into a doe-in-a-can call. It walk right under my climber. I grunted with my mouth but it didn't stop. I got it walking almost vertically. It flipped a couple of times and expired where you see it. I took the pic from my stand right after shooting. You can see my bow laying on the ground. I just lowered it before climbing down.

Well, on my 5th outing of the year I finally connected and took a decent doe last night with my bow on a 30yd shot! I had to drag her almost a half mile out of the woods (which absolutely whooped my a$$!!). I'm sore as can be right now and am anticipating either good deer chili or burgers this weekend!

It isn't a good pic, but it was taken with my phone after sunset in the middle of the woods. The hole you see is the exit wound. The entrance wound was a little higher and farther fwd.

Here is an update with a few pics from a new 1200 acre farm that I just got permission to hunt on. Nothing big antler-wise, but I'm more of a meat hunter than a bone hunter. I should be checking my trailcam again tomorrow afternoon to see what else has been there in the past week.

These are taken at the edge of a soy bean field under a couple of apple trees. I'm thinking that one of my stand locations will be about 50yds into the woods directly behind the camera to catch them coming out of the woods. We have about 9 weeks until opening day for archery season! Wooohhhooooo!!! :D

This guy has a messed up rack on his right side....it'll be interesting to see how he turns out. I'm guessing only a month or so left of growth before they slow down and stop developing.
