I've seen the motorcycle thread, now how about the fishing thread. I imagine some of the Alaska Chiefs will dominate but here's a 37" striper from Cape Cod.

I'm not going to set a record and I don't have a picture but I did pull in a 169 lb Halibut on the Mellon back in the mid 90's. Unfourtunately the skipper pulled in a 225 pounder for the patrol fish. The smaller ones still taste the best.

On another thread there was a discussion about boring sports (is fishing a sport?) I can't imagine a sport that is more boring than fishing. Of course when the fish are biting that's a different story. I gave up fishing because I just can't see the point in sitting in one place waiting for a fish to bite. Of course if I could combine reading with fishing that could make a difference. :D

The 15 minutes I spent bringing this one in was as far from boring as you can get! Plus all the other smaller ones made it a GREAT afternoon.

These are my two youngest sons at the halibut derby here back in May. I was in Nome and a friend took them. They got 2nd and 3rd. The big one is est 137lbs and the other was 98lbs.

Like I said if the fish are actually biting, it ain't so bad. One time I was fishing at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel fishing pier. I was far from being bored that night. It seemed I had stumbled upon an excellent spot. Every time I put my line in the water I caught something.

That is a beautiful backdrop. Though I used to prefer seeing it off of the fantail at the end of the ALPAT's than from the bow.

I was in Kodiak. Only way to catch that many in a single day is gill netting. Fishing for subsistence. Cheapest way I know of on how to feed the family. Dislike that reds do not run here inJuneau very well. Still waiting on the Kings to come on strong.

Here is an older pic of a Bayonne NJ Bluefish, not to confused with the Bayonne NJ white fish which don't get nearly this big. I came up with a pretty good method of hooking these bad boys. They were feeding on bunker, well I would throw a treble hook on a liter with a small torpedo lead sinker and snag a bunker. Then let the bunker do the work. These blues would rip em in half in less than 5 seconds after snagging the bunker. In most cases if they didn't get the half with the hook in it, a few second later another blue would. This guy right here pulled me and my daughter in a canoe at least 150 yards. I asked my daughter should we let him go or should we eat him? He tasted pretty good.

Ok, this isn't exactly a prize winning fish but the story that goes with the photo is pretty good I think. First off, I caught him in my backyard, which is pretty cool (side note, caught two goliath grouper there too). Second and even more impressive is what I caught him on. Don't laugh, but I hooked him on a half of a hotdog. This is the second one I've hooked on hotdog, but I didn't land the first one. Anyway, next time you go out looking for tarpon, maybe you should bring some ball park franks with you!

At the risk of being ostracized for posting after myself, here is more from the backyard fishing show I will be airing soon! Ok some of you are saying I can't believe him right now, you know who you are, but I am really laughing pretty good. I love my own jokes. Anyway, here is a nice Goliath (PC name) Grouper I caught today in my backyard -

Edited to add, Today I got his big brother. I spent a good half hour fighting this guy on my medium to light action pole. Catch and release, still a lot of fun.

Can anyone tell me about shark meat or eating sharks? I just heard and read that sharks can or will excrete urea through their meat if they aren't filleted soon enough? Are there particular types of sharks that are better to eat than others?

BMCS Dave Considine
09-02-2006, 09:42 AM
JP3

I think a slab of Mako with some soy sauce grilled is one of the best fish you can get.

One website said "They [sharks] are without the usual urinary tract, so they concentrate urea in their blood and excrete it through their skin. Urea is a nitrogenous, non-toxic by-product of protein metabolism, which must be removed by immediate bleeding, dressing and icing the shark after it is caught to prevent urea from contaminating the meat. Urea is converted by bacteria to ammonia and lodges in the tissues. Improper handling causes a strong ammonia odour and taste. Due to urea and ammonia the shelf life of fresh products is limited to a few days."

Another said "Although shark flesh contains high levels of urea and methylamine, any residual toxins that are not washed away when the carcass is cleaned will quickly dissipate when cooked. However, sharks may contain high concentrations of heavy metals, primarily in larger, older individuals. Shark meat is low fat and provides a good source of protein for people living in many parts of the world. "

I am willing to take the chance after having that Mako. They say if the shark meat doesn't have the ammonia smell, its safe to eat. Now all you have to worry about is the Mercury.

Dave

BMC John Phillips III
09-02-2006, 10:44 AM
Mercury? Ah, I used to drink that stuff out of old fish tank thermometers when I was a kid, that won't hurt you, or at least I don't think.... :p

Seriously, after I posted I was able to find a little more information as well. I was mostly looking for people's experience with eating sharks. I have tried it before, actually in 9th grade Marine Biology, we had a fish fry with a little bit of everything. I think I've had shark since but I don't remember. Anyway, the reason I was asking is cause I caught two 3' (beautiful) reef sharks yesterday and I thought about munching on one of them. But I threw them both back cause I wasn't sure. They put up a nice fight though! Didn't bring the camera so no pictures :(

FSC Jayare Parker (Ret)

Back around 1990 when I was stationed in Gulfport I caught a couple of sharks. I marinated them in a zesty Italian salad dressing then baked them in the oven. They sure did taste good.

Ok, keeping more in line with the title of this thread. Yesterday, I caught that grouper from the picture earlier again. I know it is him cause he measured out the same and the markings in the photos matched up perfectly. Pretty funny, I think he recognized me. If I catch him a third time, maybe it was meant to be.....

wow, I didn't want to post again but check this auction!

look he's getting bigger. I wonder how big he's gonna be by the time it's legal to keep him. Oh and this is the third time I've caught him, still let him go. Today I caught a 5 ft Nurse Shark, got him in about 6 inches of water but he caught a second wind and dug his way back out into deeper water and snapped my line before I could get a decent picture. Backyard fishing at it's best!

You know, this is probably a post for the Florida sportsman, but since I have been to Key West, I have caught about 6-8 Goliath Groupers (threw them all back) and only 1 Gag and 1 Red Grouper. You can keep the last two (provided the are big enough) but not the Goliaths. Of course the gag and red were not big enough to keep. Goliath's are no longer on the endangered list, but you still can't keep them. Not yet anyway. Well now that I got that out of my system, here is a picture of the Gag, a beautiful fish...4 more inches and he would have been beautifully delicious!

Frank, here's a pic of the Goliath you weren't there for.

We're in a deep freeze up here in Kodiak, AK but spring is coming and I can't wait till the halibut fishing gets off to a start. Just a few more months of sitting around getting every thing ready. All of us up here will then post some pics, I'm sure. Keep up the sport down in the warm weather. Sometime I wish I was down south but then the summer comes. Can't keep them damn salmon off my flies what a shame. :D

How do you post pictures?

DCCS Brett Wickett
01-09-2007, 05:47 PM
Keith, save the pic to your computer, then when you open the reply window on here scroll to the bottom and click the grab/upload button. Then its just follow along like you would on any email. Size limitations are kinda small though.

BMCS Dave Considine
01-09-2007, 05:51 PM
Keith

When you are in the "reply to thread" screen typing your reply, scroll down the page under the box and click on the "Grab/Upload Attachments" bar and a pop up opens. Click "Browse" and find the jpg file on your computer.

There is a size limit so it is better to "resize" the picture first. Right click on the picture and hit the "resize pictures" button. For posting it's best to select the small size. The picture will be there with the added name of (small). For example if your picture was Bass1.jpg there will be a Bass1(small).jpg there after you resize as well as the original.

Once you do it once it gets easier.

Dave

Sorry Brett - we were typing at the same time - Dave

BMC John Phillips III
01-09-2007, 06:40 PM
Some people don't have the "resize" option on their home computers. I know I don't, but you can still make it smaller by editing the picture (second option from the bottom right when viewing it) and then selecting Image - Stretch/Skew, I usually start with 50% and I always save the photo as another name so that you don't ruin the original. Hope that helps.

Hey Schon,
What billet in Anchorage is Stacy trying to get? Recruiter? Anchorage is my home town and I have always wished they had an FS billet there so I could homestead. But I had to settle for Homer, Cordova and Kodiak twice just to stay close to home.

You two could co-locate in Kodiak, Sitka and maybe Ketchikan. But I suppose you both know that from your time back in Sitka a few years ago. Stac could work with Ed (from the Maple) again if she takes an MWR billet here.

It all depends what happens here. At the end of our tour, if she is high enough she will put in for Warrant, and I will retire, and live as a retired dependant, hunting, fishing and tattooing my days away. We are not to keen on the Sitka thing again, but we loved Alaska, so which ever is open, we will go. Ed, who wants to work with Ed, hahaha.

Keith, send or post pictures when the rug is done, it is a really nice looking bear. I will be switching to a more powerful bow, and will be ready when we get back.

OK I am sorry, I gotta put another fish up or I am gonna go nuts.

Here is another fish from the JP3 backyard series. It was a full moon and fish were popping everywhere. I just went out to clear the bait off another pole before going to bed. Then I decided to cast out a mirro-lure a few times to see what kind of "action" I would get. I cast a few dozen times out in the middle with no results. Then I decided to try up in the shallows, one cast, one hit, but no fish. Then I tried again and this guy took the bait. Most Floridians refer to them as Mangrove Snappers, but you won't find them in any book or website called that - they are Gray Snapper and this is a huge one for the species. Insult to injury would be that I was outside in shorts - no shirt on Jan 3 close to midnight - how's the weather where you're at?

OK - that's my fish story, here's the picture:

oh one last thing - it was catch and release even though the kids wanted to eat him.

That's a great picture Art - I would love to be stationed up there, for maybe 6 months - after that I would have to get back - at least that's my attitude about it without having ever been there.

I know NY is not anything like AK, but I did the below freezing temperatures for 3 winters there (icebreaking in the CT river was probably the coldest I have ever experienced in my life) and I don't want any part of that again. Maybe we should start a weather thread? I got a cool picture of an igloo I built for my kids. For the record - after I moved from NY to CC, TX - it snowed Christmas day there - first time in 18 years and most snow in 100 years. I thought it was following me down!

I have to confess, I didn’t take the pic. I Hi-Jacked it from the plan of the week. I'm pretty sure the command yeoman took the pic. I'll take the below freezing temps over the hot muggy bug, snake, alligator infested, hurricane zone part of the country any day. My biggest worry here is the bears. Last summer I poured some concrete steps and in the morning there were bear tracks in them and still there today. I was going to fix them but can’t get any cheaper more realistic tracks then that.

Make sure you have that firearm with you while stompin' around out in the bush.

I heard that the best firearm to have for bear protection is a 357 mag. with the front sight shaved off.............................. that's so when you shoot the bear, and pi$$ it off and it shoves the gun up your ars, it won't hurt so bad when the doctor removes it.
