I was just looking thru my CG photo album and I came across my boot camp company photo and I realized I don't know if any of my shipmates are still in. I doubt I will find any here but I thought it would be neat if everyone posted their company here. I will start:

Kilo/Lima 136 -- Anyone?
I am trying to remember the first CC I had in Kilo, BMC Lassen? Larson? He was an ATON Guy through and through. He used to take us out to ANT Cape May's Buoy Deck and make us do push ups out there all the while pacing back and forth about how Joe Mariner needs us to pay attention to details.
I remember the Asst. CC there, BM1 Edge, I still remember this big burly BM with his hand literally wrapped around an iron trying to teach us how to properly iron our shirts on that first Saturday we were there.
I graduated with Lima, I remember RMC Jones

How come I can remamber what boot camp I was in and who the CC was but can't remember if I took my cholesterol medicine this morning, or what my last phone number was at my old unit. Thanks alot, I thought I was the old timer of this group. Make's me feel a whole lot better. :)
I actually had three companies in boot camp. Oscar 104, Quebec 104 and graduated with Sierra 104. The only CC I can remember is Quebec 104, SK1 Ishman, and that's only because I have his name written in my Coast Guardsman's Manual.
In case you are wondering why, I had trouble passing the swim test and had trouble with academics.

Hi all...1st post from me.
I went through in late '89 (U-131) CC was QM1 Richard Simmons...Yep...that was really his name and I think he's still in.
Asst CC was an Aviation Survivalman Chief Boyer...good guy. We were his first company after Simmons let him take over so things were pretty cool.
Shipley was around when I was there.. He got into a pushup contest with our star physical fitness kid...I got tired of watching when they were both in the 200's on 1 arm pushups and I left.
Good Times.

G-140 DCC Savercool was the CC. I was in Special Ceremonial Detail and our CC's were YN1 Pace and SK2 Muniz.
SCD wasn't a bad deal we were in a totally different barracks than our company and we marched ourselves, all 7 of us, to the classes. The good part was that SCD was made up of people from week 1 to week 8 so you always had some insight to what was coming up, also when the main company was out on the parade field getting beat, we were throwing rifles, marching, working on our uniforms, etc getting ready for parades around the area.
I would have preferred the mini version that prior service used to have and I think they now call pit stop. Whatever it was it wasn't available when I went to boot camp. I had about 9 prior service in my company and 4 of us went to SCD and we had the other 3 that were reverted.

Chief Bonono's company white tornadoed ours one day while out doing some important Recruit training. I still remember finding one of my boots in the toilet! The good ol days..NOT!
I really loved the day I came back to the barracks to find all of my stuff lying all over the deck. My sin was supposedly not securing the lock on my locker. I had a lot of fun cleaning it up and having to walk around the parade field with all of my stuff.
I said supposedly because I had my locker broken into one time. All it took to break the lock was to give it a good hit with a boon docker. So what was the use of ensuring the lock was secured when we were supposed to be under the honor system anyways (no thieves among shipmates and all that.)
Even after almost 27 years I still remember the time a thief stole some money from his shipmate. We all had to stand out in the area outside the squad bay while the theft was investigated. Of course after a while the perp confessed, (he found the money behind the scuttlebutt, when pressed he said that he took it.)
Another, funnier thing happened to me early in boot camp (well, its funny now, not so funny then.) During our first day at the exchange I accidentally fell in with the wrong company and marched all the way back to the barracks. When we arrived I figured out my mistake and after having been chewed out by the CC, I RAN back to the exchange. Man was I scared!!
One more. Standing in formation, in the squad bay I witnessed my first case of knee lock and fall down go boom boom. After the guy hit the deck, the CC jumped on top of him and began trying to revive him. My first thought was, oh no, the CC is gonna kill him for falling out.

Boot Camp Memories:
...Arriving in Cape May on the bus at O dark thirty, coming from Philly...
...The sound of 90 people’s heads hitting the low overhead on the bus as the scary Coastie comes on and starts screaming...
...Having a so large a company so some of you have to be quartered for the night with holding company. Not a good first impression talking to malcontents...
...Getting to the rack at 0130 and awakened at 0430 to tinkle in a cup. Let the sleep deprivation commence...
...Hemming your work pants with masking tape until the tailored pair arrives...
...puta...
...The fun pass time of peeling the skin off your sunburned ears, that haven't seen the sun since you were about six...
...Learning to iron...
...The sound of your CC's enraged voice...
...Double timing everywhere...
...Squaring your corners...
...Bang, Bang, Bang... Square it!...
...Your first white tornado...
...Sir, Yes, Sir...
...Watch coordination...
...Galley Week...
...Liberty in Wildwood in Oct...
...Getting back from liberty at 1615 when it expired at 1600 and feeling so lucky that you didn't get punished...
...Drinking at the American Legion on liberty...
There are lots more, but those come to mind for now. It has been almost 23 years and a lot of those memories are still rather clear.

1. A female member saying her ID was stolen, eveyone being litterally strip searched, stood at attention for hrs until someone confessed. It was the female that owned the ID card. She was embarassed by the weight that was listed so she delamenated her card, did a pen and ink change then taped it back together. Then got scared and threw it away. She didn't graduate.
2. carrying your mattress out to the bleachers everyday on the parade ground so they " could air out "
3. having everything you owned thrown out the window, and given 5 minutes to go retrive the items, then having to put on what ever you got for an inspection. " Hint" most did not retrieve their stuff. Looked pretty funny.
4. Watching a shipmate parade around us for a couple hrs, while he wore his BC glasses, with socks tucked into each side, nose painted red, and barking like a dog.
5. washing and waxing the squadbay decks with your "T" shirt. And you are still wearing it.
6. Having your on base liberty weekend cancelled by a lady named Pace. And she was not our CC.
I'm sure there is plenty more......LOL

How about lining up in formation after chow and have a flock of seagulls fly over and dump all over everyone and when we got back to the barracks we had a surprise PI.
MK1 Dodgen asked one kid, "What the F*!@# is that on your shirt?" a scared voice screams "Sir a bird sh.., sir a bird pooped on my shirt, sir." And then really being able to laugh for the first time without punishment, because the CC was in tears laughing so hard.

Ok, I will join in the fun, I remember forming it up just outside of the galley and one of my fellow recruits asked the CC if he could use the head. The CC replied do you know where the nearest head is? He answered, "Sir no sir!", the CC told him that he'd just have to wait til we made it back to the squad bay. Well, we all figured out why he had to ask rather than wait, a few seconds into that march it hit us...whew!!! He was a tall kid too, so everyone else had to march behind him and it was pretty wicked! Needless to say it was very messy.
That and finding a piece of dental floss (after a white tornado) encircled in grease pen on the floor, labeled "towing hawser." That was when I learned what a hawser was, a few years later I get stationed on her! :p

Reading the stories brought back memories:
Week 2, our first chance to march in the graduation parade.
We have practice the night before, one of my shipmates is racing to tape off. He is almost to the end of the roll, the CC's are yelling like mad, he flattens the tape shoves it into his pocket and proceeds to the parade field with his rifle.
A CC sees the bulge in his pocket, pulls out the flattened tape roll and proceeds to wrap the remaining tape around my shipmate who then completed parade practice looking like a mummy.
Another:
Playing fetch with Shipley -- Must have been his favorite, because he did that to our guidon bearer for leaving the guidon outside all night.
He took the tip off and hid it "somewhere" on the base. Our guidon bearer went from CC to CC respectfully asking for the tip and of course getting beat for it. When it was finally located 3 days later in the MSB at the end of the parade field, our guidon bearer was required to throw the top, run to it do 10 push ups, back and forth up and down the parade field, until he was told to secure it. If we laughed, we had the misfortune of joining our shipmate -- needless to say, we never left the guidon out again.

... until he was told to secure it.
That brought back another one. Saying "Secure it" to tell someone to be quiet. huh?
Washing your body only with shampoo, because soap left a skum that was harder to clean off the shower.
The border line heavy guy who had to walk around with a little pig taped to his shoulder. He had to tell everyone it was his little pig friend.
I don't remember seeing anyone walking around with one white glove on, but I heard the stories...
I remember one guy being so happy that his stress induced ED had finally passed. This was about four weeks into Boot.

He was a seaman on the Polar Sea at the same time we were there. At my current unit there are 2 people here that I went to boot camp with from the same company.

Uniform 130, May 89 here.
I remember being one of the first few guys to run out of the galley after lunch and find a guy from another company standing in front of us. He was at attention with a jock strap on his head. A few of us couldn't help but laugh when we saw it. :D
Problem was, we were starting to cry because we were laughing so hard. And as I remember, that was not a good place to be caught laughing; you were on display for everyone to see.

Oscar 136 - May to July 1991 - BM1 Craddock if I remember right.
We used to have to run about three miles to stand watch over the piping plovers on Cape May Beach - all night long - three hour watches. One guy got kicked out when ALL the piping plover signs were stolen while he was sleeping on watch by local high scholl kids.

Ray,
I would have a hard time believing that what with the latest cover story in the Navy Times:
Get fit or get out
Strict PFA rules take effect July 1, but waivers may save some out-of-shape sailors
By Mark D. Faram
Times staff writer
For nearly 27,000 sailors, the ongoing spring cycle Physical Fitness Assessment will be the most important one of their careers.
That’s because if they fail, it could be their last.
That should come as no surprise to the 11,079 sailors who have three or more PFA failures in the last four years on their records.........

Best I can remember, everyone started out with a green belt. Over time you had to answer various questions, IE. general orders, history, trivia......once you did this you got to loose the belt. I remember standing in the CC's office answering questions and doing MANY push-ups to loose my belt.

BMC Bonano (G-125) was the primary motivator for NOT getting rephased, reverted, hurt or sick! And QM1 Visser -- boy, she had quite the reputation of saying things that would get you thrown out on your arse today!
I only know for sure of one other person left from my company -- CWO Gina Kelly -- and that's because we came in "buddy system" -- and we were only in the same company for three weeks. Some pushup counter thought that out of the 50 pushups she did for the test, were not 7 "good" ones.

Maybe some of the newly joined retirees will post their company's so FSCS Beisiegel won't have to feel so old! :D no offense Senior Chief ;)
Also, PSC Mullins, I would have listed your husband but he's not a registered member, what's up with that?

I was stationed with both Shipley's that you are talking about. I was with YN2 Theresa Shipley on Gallatin in 91, and YN3 Shipley while I was permananent party at Cape May in 90. I remember his liscense plate was "2THEGYM" or something like that.
He was paired up with GMC Martin purposely to see who would actually get in the most trouble first. Martin did in a big way.

Does anyone else find it funny that the people you have the fondest or most vivid memories of are the ones that were hardest on you? I might be onto something.....
Being hard for the sake of being an ass is pointless, but being hard with good intentions or for the right reasons will earn you a lot of respect (at least from what I am reading here). This ironically might fall under the accountability thread too. In boot camp CC's are holding people accountable on a daily basis. Food for thought.

GMC Martin caught me staring at his wife. On Coast Guard Day. "Simoneau, you eyeballing my wife?" "Sir yes Sir!" "Get down, 1 million pushups, begin" I couldn't stop laughing after he left. What are you going to do?

GMC Martin... :D That guy was a break in CC with my company for 2 weeks before he got his red ropes and his own company. When we were a couple days from graduating, we went as a company and stood in front of his building and sang (in the Mickey Mouse tune) M.A.R.T.I.N, M.O.U.S.E.... He came out the doors like someone lit his britches on fire. "get down, get down..." Then he lectured us on respect and all the stuff. (he was hard on us, but he never earned our respect) I was about in tears from laughter. It was about as funny as the "satelite" running around our company yelling "beep beep, i'm and idiot".

Martin was the CC of another company when I was there. I remember one of his recruits walking around ALL DAY and having to salute everything he saw. "Crack in the sidewalk, good morning, crack in the sidewalk" "Bush, good morning, bush" "Flagpole, good morning, flagpole" "Butterfly, good morning butterfly". Our company laughed so hard it got us IT or whatever they called it back then. I think two people left in an ambulance that afternoon.
We also had to run the three miles down to Cape May Beach to guard the &*#^$ piping plover nests every night. One guy fell asleep and the local high school kids that were drinking on the beach stole all the piping plover signs. That guy was kicked out I think.

Martin had his company march around with a flag that had a pig on it and sing, " We're the little piglet company, oink, oink, oink." I remember felleing so sorry for them. MUC Bill carson yelled at him one time for asking someone in SCD if they played the skin flute.
Martin unfortunately brought discrace to himeself by his actions as a CC which lead to his court marshall and dishonerable discharge.

We were a "pig company" once. We had our white towel with a pig drawn on it for our flag. We had to wear our working blues inside out when we went to the galley for luch. I heard that didn't go over two well. It was all fun and games until someone crossed the line. A couple other funny things that happened was one guy was on the parade ground in a garbage can with the lid duct taped to his head and was doing the manual of arms.

I was in Sierra-124/BMC Bonano. Helluva nice guy. I remember human swabs, push-ups in the up position for an hour, no warm water in the shower until week 7 and assortment of other mind games until the last week. BMCS, the only advice I got before entering bootcamp was from about 4 recruiters, they all told me that I would hate my first 2 years in but after that give it a chance. They were pretty close. GMC Martin "You look like hammered whale $hit!"
GMC Martin did some of the funniest crap I had ever seen.
-Three recruits from another company ran by pushing thier laundry basket and failed to stop and salute him on our way back from chow. He asked if the three of them were blind and then had them push that cart around the parade field untill TAPS singing "three blind mice". HE checked on them every 1/2 hour or so.
- One big goofy guy in our company marched like a Gorilla. So he made him run around us as we marched dragging his hands on the ground and grunt (ahoo ahoo hooo hoo hoo hoo hoo) for a couple days days.
- Our mailman was rather portly (he was made mailman to get some extra run time in) and rather inept. He kept grabbing the wrong mail. HE got cranked so much one other recruit felt bad for him and voice it, so he was assigned to mailman as his official "shipmate", essentially he had to help mailman do everything. Finally mailman messed up one too many times. And he was made to get on his knees, run around and bark like a seal for like 10 minutes in the squad bay. Then shipmate was told to get a brrom, when the broom was brought out mailman had to bend over and shipmate was instrcuted to stick the broom handle where the "sun dont shine". He was screamed at until mailman was VERY upset (no kidding right), shipmate was trembling but standing his ground in defiance of what they were telling him, and everyone else just stared in utter disbelief. Eventually he just left us alone in the squadbay without saying a word.
*edit- we also ran around with our clothes backwards a few times, kinda embarrasing, but we all did it together. Funny thing is the hat being backwards (inside out) looke the wierdest.
There are many more things, not quite as noteworthy as those.
I did hear he got in trouble shortly after I left Cape May.

09-23-2006, 03:33 PM
Actually now that I think back on it.. yeah it IS disturbing, it didnt seem too disturbing at the time because we had no idea it was anything but "normal boot camp" behavior.
Just like the first night there, two other things happened that we couldnt decipher from real or "normal boot-camp happeinings".
As we first pulled in to Cape May, we had just stopped and someone came on board the bus and screamed at us to get out and form up. After 15 minutes of running around not knowing what the hell "form up" meant we were all standing in long lines on top of trianlges painted on the ground. The forming company CC asked if we noticed the driver of the bus drinking. He said he smelled alchohol on the driver. He yelled it over and over as no-one knew if he was genuine or if it was some trick to get someone to talk and then get "worked over". No-one ever said a word about it, I have no idea if it was true or not.
That night we all finally got to bed and a short time later after just about falling asleep someone started shouting "FALL OUT!, FALL OUT!, FALL OUT!" A rack then fell from the top bunk and SLAMMED the floor. Well we all got up and FLEW outside and formed up as before. We stood there for like 10 minutes before a forming company CC finally came out and SCREAMED, " WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ALL DOING OUT HERE!?!? Someone piped up that we were told to FALL OUT and so we did. THE CC said " NO-ONE gave the order to fall out and we better get our asses back to the squad bay". The next morning we found out some dude had a "NIGHTMARE" and was shaking his rack and SCREAMIN FALL OUT!, The rack above him shook off is perches and hit the deck, that was what caused us all to run outsiode.
*edit- MAILMAN of V-134. One of mailmans biggest problem CC's wasnt actually our own. It was an ETC (Lewis I think). That ETC would sinlge out mailman every time he could. He would walk into the Quarter Deck outside the squad bay and in his extremely DEEP booming voice say, "MAILMAN....WHERE ARE YOU MAILMAN?" and Mailman would start shaking immediately. ETC would then crank mailman for a bit and let him go. ETC would do that wherever we happened to be, outside medical, our squadbay, on his mailruns, in the gym, it didnt matter, whenever ETC saw MAILMAN of V-134 he would do the same thing "MAILMAN, ....COME HERE..... MAILMAN!" and then crank him. On our VERY last day there (yes mailman made it to graduation) we were marching to the gym for Graduation (rainy day) and were just about there when a window opened in the Barracks that faces the gym and we all heard that booming voice "MAILMAN...MAILMAN........I AM PROUD OF YOU MAILMAN...YOU MADE IT! GOOD JOB MAILMAN!" Mailman stood straighter and walked taller for the rest of that day than he had the entire time he was in Boot Camp. It was pretty cool.

I'll admit to being the baby of the bunch. India-154 November 10, 1998. I was a day late for boot camp. For the life of me I can't remember my CCs though. I'll have to look it up. :o

My memory is beginning to haze a bit...
But in Y-133 my CCs were AMC Bullock and RMC Jones. I was there during the time frame of GMC Martin.
I ran into him a few years later on GI. He was being processed for discharge. I remember him as such a "powerhouse" when I was there, and such a "frailty" when I saw him on GI, it was as if someone had truly shook him up..
Kinda felt sorry for him actually. But from the rumors that were circulating the rock you'd think he would have been doing hard time in Leavenworth..
But as my father always said... believe half of what you see and none of what you hear...

This is for BMC ZAPPEN and BMC MADSEN. Were you in Delta 133 (Alameda)? If so, I remember the incident before you guys went to fire fighting at Treasure Island (when you guys knocked over the instructor with the fire hose at full stream). I remember watching you guys hi-porting the rifles, playing Lizard Patrol and guarding your pile of stuff in the quad. Felt kind of sorry for you guys..... but we did laugh a lot at Echo 133.

Victor 144 with AM1 Harding and RM2 Absher. Funny times those were. Last I knew, CWO Harding had retired. RM2 Absher didn't have as succesful of a career. She went to OCS and got in a bit of "trouble" as a JO. Details are a bit to explicit to post here  .

I do have a life and I don't sit in front of a computer all night, nor all day. I haven't been that quiet, though.
