Since Pentagon Federal took over the old Coast Guard Headquarters Credit Union, I have not been terribly impressed with their policies or service. Are you satisfied with your credit union?

I use USAA for all my banking needs, and yes I'm very happy with the level of service I get.

I'm with Stu. My banking and insurance needs are met and I'm completely satisfied with them.
Linda, I too used them and still have an account. But I transfered my direct deposit to USAA.
The only time anymore that I send checks is to my nieces or nephews for birthdays. All my bill paying is online and immediate. No more paying for those stamps either (especially since they raised the postage). :D Plus if you don't need the flashy checks, you get the basic checks for free.
I would look into it, its so easy.

I use USAA, Navy Federal and Seawest Federal. At one point in time, I have used each as my primary banking, but I have to say USAA wins, hands down, for their customer service. I still have accounts at the other two, but I won't switch my primary accounts again.
My favorite thing? Hard to say -- love that they reimburse those pesky ATM fees (up to 10 a month, I think), and that if I use my check card as a "credit" I get cash back at the end of the year. It's the little things. The big things are great too -- easy to use online banking, including web bill pay service. Check imaging is awesome. Actually, don't have one bad thing to say at all.
Hope this helps.

I have had a huge grudge with USAA ever since they gypped us in paying for hail damage to our house.
But I supposed that's the home insurance co. and this is the banking division.

My renters ins with them has been pretty good. Lost electricity and food spoiled....called them and told them about it and they asked how much I had, told them and they asked if I had receipts....which I didn't, 3 days later I had a check for $300. I had lost more than that, but I'm not one to over-inflate things.
Yes, if you use your debit card as a credit card....you get .5% back a month. Not a lot, but if you charge everything and payoff your credit card, then use your debit card the same way, you get that money back with USAA.
PS. Jamie, its 9 ATMs I believe.

:) Like what I am hearing here. Just changed my checking and direct deposit over to USAA a coule days ago and now this thread. Was with my previous bank for over 20 years.
Have had no bad experiences with USAA. Renters insurance came quickly after 2 seperate Hurricanes in North Carolina and then again when 5 pieces of luggage stolen while coming to Juneau through California. Hopefully my future with USAA keeps everuthing going in the right direction.

I have my auto and renters with USAA. I just had a break down on the HWY. I called USAA, 1 hour later my car is towed to a local shop and I did not pay a dime or have any fights to get them out there. (Yes Jamie, it was my little blue car)
Now, if I could just figure out a way to get them to pay for my repair work. :D
I have been with USAA since Dec of 89.

I use First Command for banking, USAA for insurance. I've nebver had a problam with either First Command or USAA.
I have a Guardian Federal Credit Union account for travel claims, and other "found" money. It makes for a great little slush fund at the end of the year.

So far having dealt with B of A, Sea West ,& USAA,
USAA has served my needs very well including renters and Auto insurance And so far their Auto / motorcycle insurance is the cheapest I have been able to find in years.... of note, they no longer insure motorcycles (mine was grandfathered as were many others as a courtesey)... sea west the worst.. they once "misplaced a $2000 wire transfer and after complaining vehemently they started to track it and in the process "froze" my account causing 2 checks to the ship to bounce (back in the days when every state except alaska had ATM's) thank fully the F & S was understanding...when Thief West (exorbatant fees back in the day for going under $200 for the month ,,they had every non rate and E4 in alameda coming and going) finally found my money and re fixed my account they wanted to charge me returned check fees for a couple of other checks I promptly removed my $4200 from their grasp even after the Manager told me "You cant just close the account " a couple of physical threats later and and telling the nice customers in line what had happened......I had my money
I am sure the days of the old Thief West are gone but I wont even use their atm when I am out west

I use USAA for auto/renters insurance, as yet have not had to file a claim. I do like that they start a savings account for you and deposit a dividend check at the end of the year. As I understand it they divide a portion of the profit from premiums between all their customers.
There is a B of A military branch that I just switched to, and have had no complaints. If you keep a $1k balance you get $.15 deposited for every bank card transaction. They don't charge for ATM/Debit or Credit use of the card, but I don't beleive they reimburse fees from other institutions ATM's.

Harold,
My USAA insurance for two cars and a motorcycle is cheaper than just the two cars anywhere else.
USAA told me that if you sell the motorcycle and do not put a replacement bike on right away they will not insure the new one.

I just started a new checking account with USAA and had my Direct deposit shifted over. Will know on the 15th if everything went okay. According to what I was told bank card fees for ATMs are reimbursed up to either 15 dollars or 15 transactions. I can't remember which. Get .5 percent back on every Debit Card transaction if I run it like a Credit Card.

I too have been with Navy Federal for about 11 years and they have been great. I checked my insurance with USAA VS Geico, and Geico is better for me.

I've had insurance with both Gieco and USAA. I found dealing with Gieco to be as about annoying as watching their commercials. I'd pay extra for the USAA because I know what their service is like post hurricane.

I have to agree with the USAA folks, I had GEICO for insurnance but swapped to USAA and saved a couple of bucks. Now, I have insurnance, mortgage, and banking with USAA - I could not be happier.
I think USAA's policy for ATM rebates is 10 transactions and 15 dollars per month

I had a military credit union completely screw me over years ago, and will never go back to one.
I was a Bank of Boston customer that has since been merged into BankBoston, Fleet Bank, and now Bank of America. I'll probably stay with them for the long run.

How long ago was that? If more than 5 years...put it to bed...they [USAA] have changed!
Well, I'd have to check the files, Mike, but I think it was about 5 years ago. Our house had hail damage on 2 sides and they agreed to replace the siding on those 2 sides but not the rest of the house. Considering the original siding had oxidized over time and changed color, we would have had 2 different colors of siding! Not good for resale value! I said to the guy, "Well, maybe we'll just resign our membership and then you can give us that $4,000 that's sitting in the Subscriber Savings Account - that would make up the difference." But we never did - just lazy. We just paid out of pocket.
Anyway, this thread was supposed to be about credit unions ... thanks for all the opinions. PFCU just approved a $250K home equity line of credit for us ... so I guess they can't be all bad. :D
