Having been through HUGO in SC and spending countless hours on relief ops following that storm , I would like to thank those who are there, or going there, in support of this devastating storm. I have sent in the names of 3 people, half my crew, to assist in relief efforts.

Good Luck ALL!!

Was e-mailed this today.

If you heard from a Coastie (member or family), please have them contact ISC St Louis to report their safe location. Many Coast Guard persons remain unaccounted for since Monday's evacuation.

We are soliciting for donations to help our Coast guard families in the area and would like to know what the closest chapter of the CPOA in the area is so we get the funds directly there.
Any info on co-ordination along those lines in the area?

Hello all,

I just received orders as OIC of ANT Venice. I am sure that the STA/ANT are a total loss. If anyone has specific information on the area please give me a call.

BMCS SLesh, I got your message, congrats on your extension. It looks like I will have my work cut out for me next summer. The word on the street is that the area is completely wiped out and more then 70% of ATON is missing. I hope that I will still have a job next summer.

Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Hurricane Katrina Account

In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, there has been an outpouring of compassion for those Coast Guard members and families hard hit by this disaster in the impact area. Many have expressed a desire to help.

In response, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) has established an account to receive contributions designated for that specific purpose. Contributions marked "Katrina" will be earmarked and tracked to ensure they are used first and foremost to meet the needs of Coast Guard members and families associated with Hurricane Katrina in accordance with normal CGMA policies and procedures. In the event there are funds left over after meeting needs associated with Hurricane Katrina, they will be placed in CGMA's general account to assist members of the Coast Guard family in times of financial need.

Tax deductible contributions should be made out to "Coast Guard Mutual Assistance or CGMA" by check, money order or with a credit card marked in the memo area or noted for "Katrina." Contribution forms are available on the CGMA Web site: www.cgmahq.org. Click on "Contributing to CGMA."

Checks, payable to "CGMA" may be sent to the following address:

You should be able to find info for the New Orleans CPOA on the CPOA website.

I'm on DECISIVE out of Pascagoula, we have about 10-20 shipmates onboard that have had there houses or apartments are totaly demolished. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Ryan,
I would have a unit POC get in touch with CGMA on behalf of your unit. They have a special fund specifically for Katrina victims described in the post above. I have passed that info around my unit (VIGILANT) as a place to make donations.

Does anyone know if they can put this under the allotment section of Direct Access? I can with the click of a button pay my association dues through the system, can we add the Hurrican Katrina fund to be able to do the same thing under the CGMA? Does someone know the 5 digit number for Katrina? Can we do this with out having to fill out the paperwork and send every request through a sector, HRSIC? I realize the forms are there http://www.cgmahq.org/ but If I can pass at quarters to the crew, "who would like to donate". Just sign on the Direct Access and follow these few steps, type in the Select Payee's number and your off and contributing. I'm just looking for the easiest of most effictive way to get our shipmates who want to help, helping. Sometimes if it's a simple process, more are apted to get onboard. Just throwing it out there. I am contributing regardless, but if every Coastie out there donated just a little for however long it's needed, it could add up fast. What's easier than a few clicks of the mouse and a few strokes of the keys. Members could stop there contributions at anytime. If someone knows off the top of their head how or who to talk to, and can make it happen, sound off and either pass on to someone with the powers to be, or let me know, I would be more than happy to ask. I'll network the CMC world tomorrow as well.

Chris,

That's a big negative. You can take up a collection and write/send a check or money order.

Also, if anyone hasn't thought of this yet, TSP is/was home-based out of New Orleans. If anyone sent in enrolment paperwork in the timeframe from a few weeks before Katrina til now, they might want to keep an eye on their LES to make sure the paperwork went through...

Maybe this will prompt them to let people enroll either on-line or through direct-access.

We found that doing it the old way worked just fine. Passed at quarters that an email floating around stated only 2% of the Coast Guard was giving to CGMA. Me being one of them. :o
Well, I put a stack of CGMA sign up forms on the desk, gave a little talk about where the money goes, how it would be earmarked for our shipmates that are victims of Katrina, and how if you just left your contribution going, it would continue to help our coasties long after Katrina. With in an hour I faxed 12 or 15 sheets down to the YN at the Sector. The YN had them all entered in to Direct Access by COB. I saw contributions from E2's through E7's, from 2 dollars a month to 50 dollars a month. How proud I was of the crew for wanting to help anyway they could. They fully understood that they could continue their contributions for as long as they want, and could stop them when they want. Some even converted their existing CGMA contribution to the Katrina fund.
What a great way to help out our shipmates. If everyone just donated 2 dollars a month, it will add up quick!

Scott,

Congrats (?) on your orders. Half of the Station building is still there, and the ATON cutters are using it as a staging area at the moment. No power, water, communications or access is available at this time.

Everything gets a little better each day. Let's just hope Rita passes us by.
