I just received orders to the FEB 07, 2009 class. I know it is early, but I was wondering if I should drive instead of fly. I am currently at Recruiting Office Salt Lake City. SLC is as far west as I've ever been. Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you can get the command to approve that you drive, do it. PEtaluma is 15 miles from anything. During the week you will be busy but you will have some weekend free time.

Having a car would definitely make it easier to get around on your free time.

"Use of POV is authorized not to exceed the cost of a GTR." But even with that little tidbit of love from the travel folks, having your own transportation out in the cow pasture is priceless. So just do it.

You'll make lots of friends real quick if you have transportation. There are a few malls and a good size movie theater about 30 minutes north of the TRACEN off of 101 (Redwood HWY).

Having a car out here is like being the first one of your friends to get their licence! Freedom but everyone wants a ride! But it is worth it!!!!!!:)

Price of gas=$4.00 @ gallon
Gallons of gas needed= around 80
Time needed to travel= around 11-12 hours
Freedom to get away from Petaluma when you want to=Priceless...
I drove from Seattle to Petaluma and can say undoubtedly it was more than worth having to pay a little out of my pocket instead of flying.

Just a warning; the stretch of land between Salt Lake City and Lake Tahoe is, without a doubt, one of the most barren and desolate drives you can make without being on the moon.

Texas on I-10 beats it only if it takes so long to get across

Try Nebraska in January.
