I figured i'd start this thread to give us a place to discuss different machinery casualties that we may have experienced and if anybody has any input or solutions that may resolve the casualty feel free to speak up.

My casualty: Blowing fuses (KTK-R-12) on the VR3 voltage regulator on a CAT 3304 Gen set (My #2 SSDG). Symtoms were: Dropped power / gen breaker was not tripped (open) and no voltage or hertz was being displayed. Troubleshooting section in the tech pub sucks and I have a CAT:3 CASREP out for 13 hours requesting ISC EM's assistance, and havent heard a peep yet.

All,

I had an internal problem with the VR3 Voltage regulator. CAT has quit manufacturing the VR3 and now has a VR6. I think the VR6 is really from Kato with CAT's PN on it.
Switched out the VR3 with the VR6 and were all good.

On our Generator on the 55 ANB it likes too shut down when I come up on the throttles, We ruled out a fuel problem, ruled out low lube oil as well, the code we are getting does not make since to me or my EPO, it showing high exhaust temp. It really does not matter if it been running ten minutes to 3 days straight. Any idea, tech pub sucks, no real help. I am down to bring paying for a tech to come in. Any idea is welcome to try and save a few bucks

Faulty exhaust temp sensor maybe? Sounds funny that when you come up to speed on the MDE's that the SSDG tosses an alarm. They are totally independant systems. I've seen a couple of interesting things with that Onan before, but don't remember seeing this one. I'm not a mechanic, but that doesn't make sense to me.

Let us know what the verdict is when you find out...

Russell,
There should only be a few things that'll actually shut the generator down. Normally it's low oil pressure, high water temp, exhaust temp or something along those lines. One thing I'd do is see what shuts the engine down, then disable/bypass the items one at a time and see which one doesn't shut the engine down.
One other thing that comes to mind is that you mentioned it only happens when you come up on the mains. Does the generator and mains share the same seachest, and is one of the shut down parameters for the genset a loss of cooling pressure? Thats the only link that I could think of between the mains & genset...

Criag,
I changed out the exhaust temp sensor and it still dropping off line, I thinking it is a fuel issue. Senior called and he had the same problem after he got out of the yards with his 55. We are going to pull the fuel lines and clean them out, and pop the tank to make sure the supply line does not have something restricting it. All the level are good on lube/coolant. I am thinking it is a fuel issue, If I come up to full power and back off the port let it sit like until I plane out it stays up. If I just open it up it will drop off line within 2 minutes.
I will let you know what I find.
