Just wondering if there are any other cyclists (road,MTB,??) out there. Also wondering if anyone commutes by bike to work. I want to start after my wife quits working this spring but a 21 mile one way trip is daunting.....

Just get one of those cool CG cycling jerseys and the socks with the racing stripe and you should be able to fly. ;)

Oops, sorry, no pun intended.

When the weather allows, I try to ride in 2-3 times a week. It is a little over 30 miles round trip. After the first few days you get used to it. Just get a bike that you can be comfortable on for and hour or so each way. I have a cycle-cross bike. It is a good mix of road/MTB bike, I just switched to drop bars and will see soon how comfortable they are. Good bike shorts are essential! I wear regular shorts on top so I don't scare everyone, I believe that unless you are competing, tight shorts should be hidden. I feel great when riding in and seem to have more energy (at least mental energy).
Enjoy,
Eric

Eric,
Thanks for the reply. I just picked up a cyclocross bike (Novara Element), I had a touring bike (Randonee) that just never really fit right. I totally agree on the shorts! ;)

I think it would be fun to bike to work. I only have about 6 miles to the office. Only problem is that I have a take-home squad to respond to calls. So I don't know how I could get around that.

I do, mostly re-round. Here in Juneau I only have a 3.5 mile (one way) ride.

I ride about 3-4 times a week 30 miles round trip, invest in a good seat and a real good pair of riding shorts. Something that has helped my foot, had to have it rebuilt, is the clip in pegs, After a while I end up pulling vs pushing and it increased my range and easied some stress on my foot.

I will ride a few times a month (weather and ops permitting. I have to ride on some city streets that are rather tight so riding during darkness is not a popular option.

It is about 8.5 miles one way for me now. Hopefully, I can locate a house that is 10-15 miles in Maine so I can continue to ride into work.

I use a bike path for the last 3 miles of my ride, but there is one section that runs through some narrow streets filed with tourists. The ride home in the summer keeps me on my toes.
I had the same car almost run me off the road twice in two weeks. The driver was right next to me, going about the same speed and just started drifting off of the road. I almost pounded on the window but thought it would only make things worse. The second time she turned right with no signal right in front of me, of course that happens about once a week around here.

I've thought about, but that 170 mile round trip part really makes me hesitant!

On another note, once I transfer to Ohio in a few months, I plan on doing it on a regular basis. It will be an 11 mile round trip ride. I just have a cheap mountain bike, but it gets the job done. Back in my young(er) days, I used to ride all the time and compete. 60-70 mile days were nothing for me then...then I decided to sell the bike for another one with an engine! It all went downhill from there!

"commute by bike???"

Only if it's on a Harley... ;)

All of this bike talk got to me. I did my first ride in of the season today, a little cold but it felt good to be moving again.

Good on you Eric! I'm going for a ride at lunch today, my bike is on my car. I haven't worked myself up to the 21 mile commute yet. I did drive it the other day and noticed the long, 2 mile hill going home. At least I have a goal!

Ah come on Chris every good biker knows a bike belongs in the back of a Truck not on a roof or trunk of a car:D Have fun riding, I have love bug season coming up and all the critters in the bayou are coming out. Make it fun when a big old snake or gator crawls alongside of the road. Gives me some real motivation to move on:)

Actually, every good rider knows that a bike belongs on its wheels, rolling along!
