Got mine and my XPO's on Thursday. I'm off to the PENDANT (20June) and my BM1 to ANT Baltimore (01Jul). The kicker is the Detailer thinks that a two week difference between our reports dates is o.k.? That will have to change!

An email up the chain from you to your OPCON/ADCON should be sufficient to get the ball rolling.

There was a time when I and my XPO were leaving about the same time and reporting into the new unit at the same time. I told my XPO he was not to report till October and remain on the current unit for 90 more day before departing. I don't recall if I informed the detailer of my actions ...

If the command cadre is considered important ... there wouldn't be that kind of BS happening. I guess the importance is only in the mind of those in the positions and no one else as evidenced by the actions of those charged with the flow of people.

Key West to Ohio Valley... John, you would freeze your @$$ off. Isn't there a nice DIRAUX job down there in Florida?

Horrible job John, you probably wouldn't like it very much. Cold in the winter, tornadoes, so on and so on. Western Rivers to, and you know how bad those jobs are.

You know I did three years on an Ice Breaking Tug in NY right? I don't think it gets much colder than that!

There aren't any jobs in Florida to choose from, but those DIRAUX jobs do sound pretty exciting!

Ian, I almost get the feeling you are yanking my chain, but they don't use chain on the western rivers right? ;)

If you are wondering, the CWO appointees should hear from the AO by Jan 11. So I will let you know what's left at pick #12 soon after - this is almost like fantasy football but we are jumping straight to the tenth round.

I checked out it out on google earth and there is a Walmart nearby so the wife is good.

Most of the pooled water WLR's use chain.

Louisville is a big town, plenty to do.

Anyone know about the Sector Ohio Valley AtoN job (CWO)?

John,
As I told you in my PM, there are 2 CWO billets there that I know about.. One is Aux., and the person in that now is Dan Brown.. He and his wife Lisa were just here for Biketoberfest.

The other CWO billet, when I was at the Group was the Operations Officer. I was Assist. Ops. Dave Cunningham was there, then Kurt Echols... They did a whole lot of paperwork.... boat schedules, investigations, yard periods, river updates, supplies & inspections for cutters and SSD's. Dave, Kurt & I worked very well together. Not sure if they still have an E-9 there. I enjoyed it, particularly when I got to go TAD to OBION for 6 months or so when they needed a TAD OIC.

I lived in Prospect. Nice area... Many UPS pilots lived there.... At that time the Group was located in the basement of the Federal Building. I believe they are now in the building next to it, where the MSO was located at that time.. White Castle is on the corner, (walking distance) and the dentist was a few blocks down the street... also walking distance.

There is much to do in Louisville. We enjoyed our tour.. I left after we got the 22" of snow... but the real reason was to take care of my Mother. Not a bad area or job.. if you cant get Florida or something afloat.

Keep in mind, that is how things were.. not sure they are the same now...

Wray...
P.S> We used wire on OBION, not chain.

BMCM Deane Smith

Wray & John...there is no BMCM billet at SOHV. The CWO works in the Prevention Dept in Waterways Management. The CWO is the ATON Officer and does normal ATON Officer stuff. They have 2 BMC's that work for them. One BMC helps him with WWM stuff and the other does RFO stuff. A BIG part of the CWO's duties are RFO related. SOHV has 6 WLR's and at least the same number (if not more) MSU/MSD's that all get an RFO annually.

The WLR OINC's do there own schedules and the yard schedules are all generated by D8. The CWO ensures that the u/w schedules have been submitted, but that's about it. The CWO does keep track of the ATON inventory through each of the SSD's.

BMCM Wray Gillette (Ret)

Well, it was nice having a BMCM billet there in case they needed me or any BMCM to run a tender in an emergency... I loved it....

Two BMC's.??? well, whatever.... I guess that may equal one BMCM.. in the long run.... No BMC's when I was there....

While the WLR OIC's may do their own schedule, the OPS CWO may change them at any time.. (usually doesn't if everyone gets along ok...and rivers remain stable) He did maintain inventory usage for those district reports....

Like I said, I left there about 10 years ago... obviously things have changed...

Good luck to all those headed that way...

BMCS Corey Fontenot
01-09-2008, 09:20 PM
Rusty,

Yep, I am headed to Morgan City. The detailer said he would let me go there for 2 years instead of 3 since it is a BM1 billet. I am from Lafayette, so I am happy to be going there. I was beginning to wonder if the detailer was going to call me and say he was changing my orders to take your job or to say that he was sending me to Gulfport. I would have gone to any of the three jobs and been happy.

Corey,
That is good, you getting a good unit, Only have a couple of pain in the backside waterways, The Axe has a great crew, they take care of us. Thier cook can sever up some food now. They got a new 26ft and flat boat. Be looking foward to seeing you.

BMCS Corey Fontenot

I have heard many good things about the crew and unit. When I was on PELICAN, we used to tie up at the AXE moorings from time to time and I was impressed with how nice the new facilities are. A good friend of mine is the XPO of the AXE. See you this summer.

Oh man, he's legendary!!!! If it's the same cook I am thinking of, we had him TAD on the MALLET and we didn't want to let him go back. I think his name is Clark?

After one meal I complemented him and he said something to the effect of "you're just saying that" and the rest of the crew assured him, I wasn't just saying that. See I am like one of the pickiest eaters in the world, well that and I rarely complement people for just doing their job (it's a flaw).
